Advantages: tastes ok, on offer, large jar
Disadvantages: high in fat, oily
I'm a bit of a fan of dips, usually I either buy a pack from the fridge section in the supermarket or make my own but the other day whilst shopping in Somerfield I noticed this Doritos Cool Sour Cream and Chives dip on offer for £1. That's apparently a saving of 90p so I couldn't resist and dropped one into the trolley.
Let's talk about the packaging and the stats first, the jar is 300g so there's plenty of dip in there, glass with a screw lid. The lid is mostly light green to make you think of chives I suppose and has the Doritos logo on there along with a picture of a bowl of dip. The label is again mostly green, exactly as the picture above. The stats, per 40g serving, are as follows: calories 105, fat 10g, saturates 1.8g. They are the most likely you'll be interested in and as you can see there is a huge amount of fat in this! Occasional treat only I think!
Onto the product itself. The dip is cream with bits of chives in it and quite thick. It smells like chives and garlic to be honest even though they are both low down on the ingredients list they both have the potential to overshadow other smells.
As far as taste goes this is like eating chives mixed with mayonnaise. I prefer my dips from the fridge section with more of a creme fraiche base so I found this a bit oily for my liking but it wasn't unpleasant just not how I prefer them. I found I could only eat a little bit due to the oiliness but this is no bad thing with the amount of fat in it!
This has to be refridgerated after opening as it contains cream and eaten within 3 days of opening. It's fine if you like mayonnaise alot, I only like it in small doses. I think I'll revert back to chilled dips but this was just a bit of a change for me.
Overall it's not bad and as it's on offer if you want to try it now is the time.
Summary: Worth a try if you're not dieting

- 12/11/08 I can't do long-life dips - they should be freshly-made! |
