Advantages: Tasty, tangy, mourish
Disadvantages: fatty, expensive
If you're used to sitting at home in front of a DVD on Saturday nights you'd probably be a lover of the great British tortilla, Walkers attempt at a Mexican classic- Doritos. I myself am a greater lover of them, but take a particular fondness to the 'cool' variety which I'll be reviewing here.
We buy the cool Doritos six multi-pack for about £1.50 from Sainsbury's, although I understand ASDA is cheaper. The crisps of manufactured by walkers so you can guarantee to see them everywhere even though they aren't advertised.
The 30 grams of chips are triangular shaped and curly at the ends, perfect for dipping. Doritos now sells its own brand of tortilla dip, with flavors such as the hot salsa and the cooler garlic. The jars of dip are usually sold alongside the crisps at the supermarket so they'll be easy to find. The crisps come in foil-like blue bags showing a picture of 2 Doritos on the front, and nutritional values on the back. They're veggie friendly like most crisps but aren't as good for vegans as they do contain whey and milk proteins. Similarly, they also contain monosodium glutamate which many people will react too.
Taste wise these crisps are incredibly salty, and will make you need a drink after you've eaten them. When you put one in your mouth it will crunch sensationally, breaking up into tiny crispy pieces of spicy loveliness. Don't expect to eat just one bag as they are incredibly mourish, not the best considering one bag contains 175 calories. On the other hand, the crisps as most are now by Walkers, are made with sun seed oil. This is lower in saturated fats (the bad ones) than most oils used in other crisps, making them a little healthier and better for your heart.
God knows why the crisps are called 'cool' as they really aren't. They have elements of herbs and spices in the taste, which may well just be flavorings but tastes real enough. The smell is aromatic and authentic too. Doritos are very similar to their Mexican counterparts so perfect to eat with fajitas and other dishes.
Overall it's a crisp worth trying. A cool crisp that'll make you look cool eating it. For nights in, these little chips are the best option going. Whack on Indiana Jones, sit back, and tuck in.
