Advantages: Great taste

Disadvantages: High in calories and fat

When I was back at school, my school tuck shop went through a strange healthy eating phase where they decided to ban all potato crisps. However, they still allowed Doritos to be sold as they are made of corn (though I don't see how these were any healthier). This led to lots of us buying this snack and a fondness soon developed for the triangular shaped crisps.

The packaging:
The cool original flavour doritos come in a bright blue packet with the Doritos logo emblazoned on the front in white handwriting. There is then a picture of what the crisps look like as well as a quick guide to the nutritional information at the bottom. There is currently a promotion to win an xbox and a game of guitar hero which is also advertised on the front.

The taste:
These crisps are triangular shaped, and, as they are made of corn, have a rougher and more grainier texture. I suppose this makes them crunchier to eat then most potato crisps. Also, whereas potato crisps are usually pale yellow in colour, these are an orange shade. There is a generous amount of seasoning placed on the crisps that gives them their cool original flavour. The taste of this flavour is very hard to describe as they are neither sweet nor spicy. However, their unique taste is very nice, though strong, which means they can leave a bit of an aftertaste. I find these crisps are very moreish and are great to eat with dips including sour cream dip and salsa.

The controversy:
The debated use of porcine enzymes (enzymes from pork) and other pork derivatives in the cheese making process, the cheese of which is subseqently used to flavour the doritos has been a controversial talking point. Though these packets now state that they are suitable for vegetarians, some sites still claim these enzymes are involved. If they are, this would make the product unsuitable for all vegetarians, vegans, muslims and jews. However, as the packet does say it is suitable for vegetarians, I would assume the derivatives are no longer being used. This is in relation to the doritos sold in the UK as some sold in the US may still not be suitable.

The nutritional information:
These doritos are very high in calories with 500 calories and 27g of fat per 100g. This is avery large amount and therefore this snack may not be the best choice if you are watching your weight.

Overall, though unhealthy, these are a delicious alternative to potato crisps and I would recommend you try some in the future. However, as they are high in calories and their suitability for vegetarians etc is suspect, I am only going to give this product three stars.

Summary: A unique flavoured alternative to potato crisps
