Advantages: Doritos crisps are tasty and have great texture

Disadvantages: But the cheese flavour is the letdown

There are things I really like about Doritos. To me, maize-based crisps are much nicer than the potato version. They have a more interesting texture, as although the chip is crisp as a whole the maize grains it is made of have a slightly springy bite to them also. They are more filling which is no bad thing when you are trying to reduce calorie intake, and less oily. Their more robust nature also makes them much more suitable for dips.

I like them so much that my favourite ones are often the plain salted versions, where you just get a taste of maize with a slight buttery edge enchanced by the gentle saltiness. But I'm also a fan of the cool original flavour in particular - it seems to have much more punch than regular crisp flavours and I like the salty/sweet paprika edge to it. I'm not sure what it's actually supposed to taste like, and that would normally put me off, but in the case not.

So they Tangy cheese flavour I found a bit disappointing. It's not really all that tangy, and has something of a dry and dusty feel to it. Nor is it particularly cheese-like. The flavour is not the cheese you might taste in a cheese and onion crisp, but like cheese with paprika without the balance of the cool original version. So for me, this is the worst of a good bunch.

Summary: Good base but the flavour isn't up to much.
