Advantages: A great idea poorly executed that aims to recreate a great British dish!

Disadvantages: Not strong enough- tastes like a weak salt n vinegar!

As part of a recent gimmicky novelty promotion, Walkers are currently trying out six new flavours, "as designed by you", on the British public. Whether or not this is a crack-pot idea or simply inspired, the jury is still deliberating but certainly it is a great way to draw attention to their products! Fish and Chips flavour is a throwback to an older generation who remember the old Fish and Chip biscuits you used to get (and chicken and chips too!) or old, tradditional Scampi fries that always made me feel ill whenever anyone opened a packet in my presence.

It is not the first time that Walkers has featured this flavour- remember Salt N Shake? I think you can still get them. Well, for a while they also had Flavour N Shake in the eighties and this was the worst flavour of the three or four that featured in the multi-packs you could buy. The advantage there was that you could control the strength of the flavour by how much of the sachet you put in....

My first opinion when I ate these new experimental Heston Blumenthal style Walkers was one of indifference; they seemed to me to have very little taste except for a hint of lemon. (which strangely is not listed in the ingredients but is a traditional accompaniment to fish!) My wife instantly compared to them to the aforementioned infamous Scampi Fries, but I only got the merest hint of fishiness. This did however change the further I went down the packet though never standing out and slapping me in the face the way other products of this variety have in the past. This is a good thing for me as this has never been my favourite flavour variety ( though those fish n chip biscuits you used to get were well scrummy) but did mean they were a tad indistinctive and in no way anything to write home about. The most notable thing I picked up was that my fingers smelled more fishy than the crisps themselves tasted (no crude jokes please!) and I actually felt a bit disappointed with this variety. Yes, I may not have liked them if they had been stronger but at least I could have had an opinion about them other than sheer apathy.

In all honesty, the only reason I tried these was because they were in one of the two multi-packs that these new varities come in (two x three flavours in each multi-pack) and I certainly wouldn't have bought them otherwise. And won't be buying them again even if they win.

My final thoughts were that these were like a weaker version of salt n vinegar Walkers and far less enjoyable. So, as Duncan Ballantyne would say on Dragons Den....."I'm oot!" Or rather that is, for me, this flavour is out of the running!

Summary: hmmmmm nil points from me I'm afraid!
