Advantages: Taste nice, taste authentic

Disadvantages: High in fat, nothing too original

Does anyone remember the fish and chip crisps that were on the go in the 80s/early 90s? They were more like biscuits than crisps, some were shaped like fish and some like chips. They came in a packet that had mock newspaper print on it. I seem to remember that I liked them but my tastes were probably a lot less sophisticated in those days. So when I found out that one of the Walkers trial flavours was Fish and Chips, I imagined them as tasting somewhat similar.

The strongest smell when opening the bag is definitely vinegar although there's a fishy undertone there aswell. Not an unpleasant smell - somewhat similar to Scampi Fries. I actually thought the smell was surprisingly authentic.

As for the taste, well bizarrely I found that it did taste a bit like Fish and Chips. I guess this shouldn't be a hard flavour to get wrong though, as crisps are made from potatoes so the chip element is already there. The vinegar taste is strong so the crisps do taste similar to Salt and Vinegar flavour. There is a salty, fishy taste there aswell, as with the smell it's a similar flavour to Scampi Fries. I also found that these crisps are a bit greasier than the other flavours. Maybe its an attempt to get them as similar to real Fish and Chips as possible?

Greasiness aside I liked these crisps and they have marginally overtaken Chilli and Chocolate as my current favourite. They have a strong, authentic taste and although they taste a bit like Salt and Vinegar, to me the flavour is different enough and they would make a nice change from plain old Salt and Vinegar.

The greasiness was a down point so if they win the competition I'd like to see Walkers make them a bit "drier"! The other downside is that although they taste and smell a bit like a chippy, they are nowhere near as satisfying. So after polishing off a bag of thses, I'll probably find myself wanting the real thing!

As far as crisps go this is an OK flavour and I'd eat them again.

Summary: Not bad

I've tried all of these new crisps and none of them are that nice. This is probably the pick of the bunch though.
