Advantages: good crunch

Disadvantages: odd fishy taste

For me, fish and chips is best consumed by the seaside, seated near a pier or from the local chippy, provided it is a good one. The thought of having an entire bag of crisps drizzled in the aroma of fish and chips seems decidely dodgy. This flavour came out when Walkers introduced a selection of new flavours a few months ago to see which one the public liked best. It is perhaps telling that this flavour did not win the public vote.

The taste of the crisps is hard to get your head around. How can you have a crisp that tastes of fish? And what sort of fish is it? It certainly does not have the meaty taste of a seasbass, nor the delicate flavour of a salmon and I don't think it's even got the light freshness of the common cod. It is just a fish, albeit a synthetic tasting fish. The overriding flavour that comes off these is more akin to salt with a hint of something savoury pushing through. It is by no means a foul taste, but it just does not taste natural enough for me. The fish taste is far too processed and does not capture what fish is all about.

As with all of the Walkers range, expect a good crunch to the crisp and a decided lack of crisps in the bag! The smell is quite overwhelming and it is suggested, by me, that you eat them quickly or in a dark room. They will make the breath reek afterwards, so have a mint at hand.

When these were released they came as part of a multipack and could be bought from most high street supermarkets. I am not sure whether they are still in ready supply, but The Builder's Breakfast flavour is, and that gives you a better all round and authentic flavour than this. Stick with fishfingers at least!

Summary: not quite fish
