Advantages: Taste just as good as regular crisps
Disadvantages: Still quite high in fat
I do tend to eat crisps with my lunch at work, and usually buy the full fat Walkers ready salted crisps from the vending machine. When I was in Somerfield last week I noticed that the Walkers Lights Simply Salted crisps were half price, as well as having an extra 25% discount as they were nearing their use-by date. At only 52p for 6 packs, I couldn't really refuse the offer, as the ones I buy from the vending machine at work are 40p for just one pack.
Walkers lights are the lower fat version of Walkers crisps. They come in a red foil pack which is not too dissimilar from the regular walkers crisps.
It states on the pack that compared to Walkers standard crisps they contain 33% less calories.
The crisps certainly don't look any different to the regular one, but it's evident when you remove one from the pack that they feel a lot less greasy to the touch than regular walkers.
Taste wise, I found the crisps to be quite nice. Often with low fat or diet versions of products, you seriously compromise on taste, but this wasn't the case here. The crisps did taste a lot lighter and slightly crunchier than the regular ones, but still tasted just as good. I had thought perhaps they would use extra salt to overcompensate for lack of taste, however they were not any more salty than the regular version I am used to.
Each 24g pack contains:
113 calories
1.7g protein
14.6g carbohydrate
5.3g fat
0.1g sodium, equivalent to 0.4g as salt
So, looking at those figures you will see that they are still not particularly healthy or low fat, but I suppose if you are eating the standard version regularly, it could be worth switching to these ones if you want to consume less calories, without giving up the crisps completely.
A six pack of these crisps will cost £1.40 from Somerfield, however I'm sure if you look around you will be able to find them cheaper. They are also sold individually, for around the 40p mark.
Overall, I was quite impressed with these. They taste just as good as the regular ones, and although I know they are still not good for me, I will consider buying these instead of my regular ones from now on.
Summary: Simply Salted
