Walkers are a long established maker of Crisps, having been around for 60 years now . Originally, Henry Walker took over a butchers shop, but when meat rationing came into force during the second world war, he had to look for alternative ways of making an income . Crisps were starting to become popular then, so he began making his own, the first flavour being cheese and onion . Over the years, the brand has grown, introducing many more flavours - from salt and vinegar right up to cajun squirrel. In the last few years, they've also bought out the 'Sensations' range of crisps and snacks, which had a more adult, sophisticated feel
For new years, I held a party at home , and collected an assortment of nibbles, including a 90g bag of the Lime and Coriander Chutney Poppadom Bites. They were on sale at my local shop for 75P a bag (due to people in my local area not being particularly adventurous, they'd been reduced to half price to get them sold!). I tipped them into a bowl, set them out on the table with the other snacky objects and dips, and settled down to enjoy my night with friends.
Opening the packet, you can see the poppadoms (kind of a wafer thin indian cracker) which are round, rough in texture, and slightly curled at the edges , with visible flecks of coriander. You're also hit with a spicy, peppery aroma, as well as a whiff of lime - it sort of erupts into your face.
Eating them, they are airy, light, and crispy, making a satisfying crunch when you bite into them, and they seem to melt in the mouth. They taste very much like traditional poppadoms, which I think is due to the fact they are made with proper gram flour , a flour made from chickpeas and a traditional ingredient in authentic indian poppadoms.
The limey hit is instant with these, not overpowering, but still very much present. Under this, you can also taste the fragrant herbiness of the coriander. These didn't feel greasy, as some crisps do, and were, overall, quite delicious . Theres a slight spiciness to these crisps which works well with the refreshing lime flavour. In fact, they reminded me a little of a mild aromatic curry.
We also had an array of dips laid out to go with these, and their size and shape makes them very suitable for dipping, and despite how thin they were, they could hold a good dollop. They went exceptionally well with Mango Chutney and Raita dips, but not at all well with sour cream and chive.
There are 465 calories per 100g, which sounds like a lot, but honestly, thats a pretty huge portion . Walkers recommend a portion size of 18g, which is about the same amount as a normal packet of crisps, and weighs in at a far more palatable 84 Calories. However, these crisps aren't particularly filling, and it would be easy to eat a whole bag without feeling full, so some degree of self control is needed, especially for people like me, who eat everything tasty!
If you do decide to buy these, the bag will easily stand out on a supermarket shelf, being bright purple with photos of lime, coriander stalks, and the finished product. Normally, these cost about £1.50, and I've seen many supermarkets have multibuy savings on these .
These crisps are vegetarian and suitable for coeliacs , however, as with many snack foods, the packet contains a warning that the product may contain traces of nuts .
Overally, a fresh tasting, fine quality product that I wouldn't hesitate to buy again . A bit high in calories and fat for everyday snacking, but as an occasional treat, I can't fault it . I do feel the price is perhaps a little excessive, and I would like to see these offered in smaller bags, as they are very moreish and its easy to eat too many, so for these two minor points, I shall deduct one star.
