Advantages: Taste delicious and like real bacon, not greasy, a lovely light texture, gorgeous smell
Disadvantages: Hard to find
I do like a nice packet of crisps sometimes and one of my favourite flavours is Smoky Bacon. Unfortunately these are getting harder and harder to find in the shops by me so I only get to have a bag now when I'm either in the pub or buying a massive multi pack of crisps. Today though I found a tiny shop that still sells these so I bought a few bags to keep in my snack drawer at home.
The thing I like about Walkers Smoky Bacon crisps is the lovely meaty saltiness that covers each crisp. They taste surprisingly similar to real smoked bacon in my opinion, and have a nice sweetness that should taste awful on a savoury snack like crisps but is actually very moreish. Each crisp is well coated in flavouring so that you are getting a nice mouthful of taste with each and every crunch.
Smoky Bacon crisps, like other Walkers varieties, are a non-uniform size and shape which I think adds charm to the crisps. I also like the fact that the colour of these crisps is a nice warm paprika hue which makes them look lovely when added to a bowl of mixed crisps for a buffet.
They have a wonderful crispy, crunchy texture and make a refreshing snapping sound when I bite into one - sometimes the crisps in the bag are so big that I have to break them in half to get them into my mouth, but that is fine because as I break a Smoky Bacon crisp the smell seems to intensify. Most people will say that Cheese & Onion crisps are the ones which smell the strongest but I disagree because I can sniff out someone eating Smoky Bacon from 100 yards!
Walkers have moved with the times and now make their crisps using the healthier Sunseed oil, which I think has had a negative impact on some of the flavours such as Salt & Vinegar which I think now taste quite bland. Sunseed oil seems to suit Smoky Bacon though because they now have a fresher and more intense flavour than I remember.
There are about 175 calories in a standard bag of Smoky Bacon crisps, but if you buy a multi pack you get smaller bags and therefore less calories. These crisps are suitable for vegetarians, which surprised me because this is such a meaty flavour that I assumed they would be a no-no for veggies! As I mentioned earlier these seem quite hard to find at the moment but if you find individual packets anywhere they will cost about 45p, perhaps a little more if you are buying them in the pub.
Summary: My favourite flavour crisps.
