Advantages: Yummy, crunchy and filling
Disadvantages: Lack of flavours, the ready salted is rubbish!
I used to eat Squares all the time when I was younger and then you didn't seem to see them around so much. Recently our vending machine at work has started to include Squares so I thought I would give them another go.
Squares are available in only 3 varieties, Ready Salted, Cheese and Onion and Salt and Vinegar. They cost the same as a standard packet of crisps so you would be looking at about 45p for one packet, Squares are also available in a multipack or you can buy them from our staff vending machine for 10p! (Everything in our machine is at wholesale prices...!)
Squares are made by the good folks at Walkers but the crisps themselves differ from the ordinary Walkers crisps in that they are made by potato granules and not potato slices and that they are Square shaped (do you think that's where they got the name from?!) You can taste the difference in that the texture of the crisps themselves are more crunchy and you can feel the granules. I find the square crisps alot more satisfying to crunch and munch... beware these are definately not a cinema snack as they are quite noisy to eat!
The vital statistics of the Salt and Vinegar flavour (as this is the flavour I am currently eating!) are for one 25g bag
108 Calories (5% of the recommended amount)
0.9g Sugar (1% of the recommended amount)
4.5g Fat (6% of the recommended amount)
0.4g Saturates (2% of the recommended amount)
0.6g Salt (9% of the recommended amount)
So not the healthiest snack on the market but not the worst either especially considering there is 33% less fat than normal Walkers, and lets be honest, if you want a healthy snack you're not going to choose a packet of crisps! I'm a strong believer in 'a little bit of what you fancy does you good' so as an occasional snack these are fine!
Now that the boring bits over, lets get down to the good stuff, the taste!
The ready salted variety I find are quite bland, and taste very strongly of potato, now I know that they are potato crisps but they actually taste quite like I would imagine plain potato granules to taste of, and to be honest if I wanted that taste I would just chew on a raw potato and save my % of calories for a chocolate bar!
The salt and vinegar variety are my personal favourite and have a nice salty and tangy flavour. The flavour is not so strong as it will make your eyes water like with some other brands (Discos you know who you are) but not bland and without flavour like some of the cheaper brands of crisps. I would personally say there is just the right amount of flavouring added to these crisps, slightly less than the other Walkers crisps, which suits me fine as I find normal Walkers to have rather too much vinegar.
The Cheese and Onion flavour is lovely as well, but differs completely from the normal Walkers flavour. I find the Walkers crisps have a more 'mellow' taste where as the Squares flavour is a little more tangy, and, dare I say it I feel they have used slightly more onion in their recipe. So if you've ever eaten a cheese and onion crisp and found the flavour lacking and want something with a little more kick to it then these are the crisps for you!
I personally find that Squares fill more of a gap than standard crisps, possibly to do with them made of granules and not sliced potatos they just seem a little more substantial. I would thoroughly recommend these to any snack lover and will definately be eating more of them!
I give these only 4 stars though because of the lack of varieties and the fact that the Ready Salted flavour is so naff!
Summary: Definately worth a try if you haven't already!
