Advantages: Taste so cheesy and crispy and moreish . . .

Disadvantages: That'll be the monosodium glutamate and the scary sunshine yellow . . . .

Doritos
Love ‘em? Or Hate ‘em?

Well it seems my unborn child has already inherited the family penchant for cheese, and is turning her mother into even more of a cheese freak than she was before. Cheese on toast, cheese on crackers, cauliflower cheese, macaroni cheese, cheese in soup, cheese on oatcakes, cheese simply cut from the block, and dipped, ceremoniously in tangy homemade tomato pickle. Cheese. And now, cheesy blinking Doritos. I am craving cheesy Doritos even though they are SOOOOO bad in such large quantities!!!! But they taste yummy at the moment, so I try not to worry too much about it!

But I have to say that if I was not pregnant, craving food nasties like Doritos and hotdogs (with soft onions, tomato sauce, and white soft hot dog rolls….Mmmmm), and fairly hormonal when I’ve not eaten for about an hour, I probably wouldn’t go near these damn crisps with a barge pole. Not even a very long one. And I’ll tell you why.

Sunset Yellow. This is the lovely substance which makes Doritos that warm golden corn yellow colour. You may be interested to know, if you didn’t already, that it’s pretty bad for you. It is actually banned in Norway and Finland – yes, BANNED – and can cause all sorts of horrid allergic reactions, including:

"...urticaria (hives), rhinitis (runny nose), nasal congestion, allergies, hyperactivity, kidney tumours, chromosomal damage, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, indigestion, distaste for food; increased incidence of tumours in animals."

(from the uk food guide online - ukfoodguide.net)

Food companies like Walkers, who make Doritos, could use beta carotene to colour their crisps. It would be better for the consumer, but not, it seems for the companies wallet. Beta carotene costs more. And we all know that money rules the world.

So you can see that despite the fact that they’re low in saturated fat (well, not much lower than a normal bag of low fat crisps – 1.1g) and cooked in sunseed oil which is apparently the most healthy oil you can cook in these days, they’re big on added nasties, like monosodium glutamate (makes it taste yummy but is not that great for your health). So all in all, yes they taste great, they’re crunchy, they are fabulous dipped in sour cream and hummus, and they make a chilli-con-carne dish look so terribly authentic, but they’re bad, bad, bad. And I wish I didn’t like them so much!

A standard bag of Doritos will set you back anywhere between 40p and 55p, depending on where you buy them. You can buy the bigger bags (140g and upwards) for BOGOF deals at supermarkets or on the high street.
If you're a huge fan of the wonder of Doritos, then you can visit the website at www.doritos.co.uk.

My final thoughts on the matter is that I hope this craving doesn’t last, or that I can find something else to replace it with. Maybe it’s just mind over matter? Perhaps I should have a new mantra to meditate and include the phrase “sunset yellow is made from coal tar waste….sunset yellow is made from coal tar waste…Doritos are bad…Doritos are bad…” Think it will work?

Thank you for reading, Kate x

Summary: Don't do it! Or is you have to, try and limit your consumption!
