Advantages: great taste & little shrinkage
Disadvantages: curls whilst cooking resulting in burned edges
I always try to have at least 1 pack of bacon in the fridge as it's so versatile & the whole family (including the pets) love it.
The last pack I bought was from our local Spar & cost £1.19 for 8 good-sized rashers - it's not the cheapest bacon around but I always think Wall's get the taste & texture just right without too much fat around the edges.
We have bacon butties at weekends ( with ketchup or brown sauce) but I also use chopped bacon in pasta dishes or in quiches & omelettes to add a bit of extra protein & texture to the dishes.
I also like to wrap our turkey in bacon rashers at Christmas to stop the bird from drying during it's long cooking time or for making bacon rolls to serve with Christmas dinner.
The packaging is slightly different now from the picture shown - it has 'less shrinkage' written all over the right hand side.
The pack itself has a thick polythene base & the lid is a thinner pull-back type - this style of packaging is always a bit fiddly I think but I usually tend to use the whole pack so don't have to store the remainder.
The taste is lovely if you like strong-tasting slices but I did have a surprise when, half-way through grilling, when the ends started to curl up!
I know that there is a high water content in bacon & it's full of artificial ingredients which help preserve the pork, but this curling meant that the edges were cooked sooner than the middle & burned.
However, having removed the burnt bits, the taste was lovely - but what a shame!
I think in future I'll try frying gently instead of grilling the rashers & see if the shape stays flat?
I'm a bit reluctant to change brands as I've found cheaper makes to be full of fat , containing far too much water & those which fall apart when cooking.
The best thing about Wall's is the fact you're not subject to all that 'white stuff' which exudes from many other bacon rashers - I hate to think what's in it?!
The pack weighs 260g & has all the nutritional information & ingredients listed on the reverse plus directions for cooking & an address & website for comments/ queries.
summary
~
- not the cheapest bacon on the market but, in my opinion, the tastiest.
- not much 'white stuff' left on the grillpan during or after cooking.
- very little shrinkage.
- nice strong taste but may not be to everyone's liking?
- pity about the curly edges though.....
Summary: in my opinion the best tasting bacon which is easily available

- 04/12/08 Nice review. I went to a transport cafe once where they plonked a lump of iron on your bacon, no curly edges there! |

- 04/12/08 I really miss 'real' bacon. I am fed up with smoked Polski bacon - it just isn't the same. Nice review. |
