Advantages: Delicious bacon, cooks very well, the fat is perfect
Disadvantages: As awkward as any other bacon to open!
I do love a nice bacon sandwich but am rather picky about what bacon I use, I do like a certain amount of fat on my rashers but not too much. I also like to be able to cremate the fat without the bacon burning, I don't like each rasher to be too thick but it has to be thick enough for me to be able to taste it on a sandwich.
This is why I love Walls Smoked Back Bacon so much, it's specially created to have less shrinkage than other brands of bacon and the fat is a very thin strip which cooks beautifully without fail.
I love the fact that the bacon rashers are very thin, they cook in my George Foreman griller in less than 8 minutes and the meat always retains its moisture without drying out like other thinly sliced bacon. The fat is delicious, adding an interesting texture to my sandwich which is not at all overpowering and is cooked so well that it crackles on my tongue as I'm eating it.
The flavour of this bacon is nothing short of delicious. It's a very smoky taste which is wonderful on fresh bread with a dash of ketchup, this intense flavour makes up for the fact that the bacon is so thin as it completely infuses the bread with the smoked bacon taste and actually makes the rashers seem more substantial than they really are as the flavour is so strong. My kitchen retains the beautiful smell of freshly cooked bacon for some time afterwards and I often have to make my daughter and son in law a sandwich if they pop in while the aroma is still in the air.
I can confirm that this Walls bacon doesn't shrink much, which is partly down to the short cooking time I think, and the rashers I took out of the George Foreman were pretty much the same size as when they first went in. When cooked they stay nicely pink, with an almost black edging of fat, and have not curled up at the edges at all.
This bacon is rather expensive, a 262g pack (8 rashers) costs £2.39 in Sainsbury's which is roughly 40p dearer than their own brand thinly sliced smoked bacon. In my opinion this is money well spent though as the bacon keeps well in the fridge and is the absolute perfect texture and flavour for me, if I had to moan about anything it would be the fact that I cannot get into the pack without resorting to a pair of scissors even though it is supposedly easy-open. But then I find ALL bacon hard to open, not least because I have arthritis in my hands, but this is a real nuisance as cutting the sealed top means I have to then put all the left over bacon into a Tupperware container for storage instead of being able to simply smooth the top back over and place the wrapper back in the fridge.
This is a minor problem however, the bacon itself is wonderful and for this reason I will carry on buying it. Also available in an Unsmoked variety, which I haven't tried myself but my granddaughter informs me it's very 'porky' - whether this is a good or bad thing I'm not too sure!
Summary: The best bacon around!

- 05/03/09 I find smoked bacon comes up a little too salty for my taste. |

- 03/03/09 The unsmoked is nice and cooks exactly the same way as you have described. Good review. |

- 03/03/09 You should go to Tesco - they always have this on special offer (usually 2 for £4) not much of a saving but, as they say, every little helps . . . . ! |
