Advantages: tastes nice, good flavour range
Disadvantages: very pricey, small, not filling
A month or so ago I was in the supermarket and being a cheapskate of course I hovered over to the reductions section. I was surprised to see not just rejected vegetables lying about but in fact something decent Magnum Desserts for only 99p. I bought these happily but since that fortunate day I have searched high and low for these things and can’t find them anywhere.
It is strange because I have visited Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and looked in the ice cream section but nothing, they are not there can someone please let me know why I am not finding these. Anyway on days when I do see them of course it’s always in a reductions fridge so I am usually lucky enough to see them there. I think the main reason these desserts are usually reduced is because of their high price.
As nice as these desserts are there is no way that they are worth £2.49 for two dome shaped cake desserts, it’s ludicrous. They are barely even really filling enough and I think £1.70 should be their price or something around that. Ignoring the price though the product is very rich tasting and there is a nice choice of flavours to choose from.
When first buying these I tried the flavour Chocolate Desire which was very nice but the one I last ate and know more on is Raspberry Tease. The other two flavours I didn’t mention are Strawberry Secret and Caramel Encounter. There is a flavour there for everyone so you get a good enough choice I’d say. I think out of the two I have tried the raspberry one was my favourite because the raspberry filling adds a lot more to the dessert.
So the packaging for these desserts I would definitely say is tasteful (excuse my pun) and of course sophisticated. The box is a rich burgundy/maroon colour with the gold Magnum lettering. It then has white on top of the dark background so that you can easily read the facts. On the side is a picture of the dessert which makes you want to eat it right away and is definitely tempting. The box says do not freeze so I have obviously been looking in the wrong supermarket area as these must be in the fridge section.
So the actual desserts are in a tray and you pull these out of the box to see two miniature sized chocolate domes. If you are greedy you could eat both but I usually just eat one. The chocolate exterior is like a hard shell but the chocolate is very nice. Under this layer is a creamy sort of mousse type custard layer then under that is the raspberry sauce filling and with this is some chocolate cake.
I think the whole dessert is nicely balanced out, the cake inside is a nice balance with the vanilla and chocolate. Breaking further into the dome reaching the raspberry centre adds a sweet taste but not too bitter. Altogether the dessert is nice but a bit awkward to eat I’d say. Once you eat it you feel like oh that’s it as there’s not really much there too eat. It is very soft and pleasant and is like a little snack really, a treat.
The main annoyance I found with this dessert was trying to break into it. The chocolate is actually like a hard shell so delving your spoon into it will take a few hits for some chocolate to break. However, my dessert went flat when I eventually broke into the chocolate and the whole shell broke away from the vanilla layer following. I was very annoyed with this as it ruined the whole fun of breaking away every layer to reach the core.
Maybe leave these out a bit after them being in the fridge to soften the chocolate a little or you could pick it up with your fingers and attempt to eat it like a burger although that takes the sophistication away. The whole dessert is a nice idea but they maybe should make them just that little bit bigger as I don’t get the idea these desserts sell very well and I can see why. I am kind of addicted to buying them because they are so nice but if I can keep seeing them reduced even at £1.99 why would I pay £2.49?
I went on the Walls website to see if I could get any product information on Magnum Desserts and they don’t seem to have anything on them so you can’t get any information on them online. The box has all of the nutritional information you need though and each desert is 309 calories which is high sort of but if you’re treating yourself then maybe you can allow for it that day. It is suitable for vegetarians and contains milk, egg, wheat, gluten, soya and has nut traces for those with food allergies.
If you want to stay home one night have a nice chocolatey snack I suggest going into your local supermarket and buying these as they are nice if not that filling and satisfy the appetite just enough.
