Advantages: Unique, exotic taste.

Disadvantages: Cinnamon can be overpowering. Fattening.

I'd seen two new Magnum's advertised recently - Chocolate and Caramel and Almonds Magnum Temptations which are the new 2009 range of the popular ice-cream lolly - and was keen to taste them. Hearing the bells of 'Greensleeves' ringing out from an ice-cream van the other day I rushed out and asked about the Magnums. The vendor told me these other kind were the newest Magnum they stocked and shoved two of these Magnum Mayan Mystica's into my hand.

Mayan Mystica's were actually new in 2008 and were launched with an advertising campaign starring Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria. I remember the sexy advert but the description of the ice-cream never really appealed to me much. It is described as having "delicate spice flavours". The word 'spice' makes me think of hot, tongue tingling, onion-esque vegetable type foods. The idea of a spicey ice-cream was definately off-putting! However, I'd bought these ice-creams so I figured I may as well try them.

The ice-cream comes in a gold and orange wrapper - rather like an Aztec ingot! Printed on the wrapper are orange coloured Aztec designs with the words "Mayan Inspired" enblazoned on the front. There is also a picture of a Temple of Gold which really makes me think of decadence and of exotic treats.

Magnum ice-cream bar lollies have a distinctive tear shaped design. They have a thick spatula shaped stick which is easy to hold. The outside of the ice-cream is coated in thick milk chocolate. The quality of the chocolate is very good. It has a creamy cocoa taste and is non-waxy like many ice-cream bars are. The thick crisp shell is lovely to bite into and the chocolate breaks off into manageable chunks.

Inside the Mayan Mystica the ice-cream is actually milk chocolate flavoured combined with 'spice' flavours. I didn't need to check the ingredients to know that one of the added spices must be cinnamon. Infact, this is the overriding taste which is very strong. I actually become immune to the flavour after a while and the other spice, nutmeg, is allowed to come through a little. The nutmeg is definately overpowered by the cinnamon though. There are also slight hints of honey flavour and I would say that the ice-cream consistency seems to be soft and runny as if blended with a honey substance. The flavours go together brilliantly. It is ultra sweet though and important that you like the taste of cinnamon.

I was very surprised by the sweet, sophisticated and unique flavour of the ice-cream. I can honestly say that I haven't tasted another ice-cream quite like it. The 'spice; flavours are nothing like I imagined they would be - the important word in the description being 'delicate'. I am not even that partial to ice-cream but this Magnum could change my view on that! I think that the company's marketing campaign was quite clever, associating this ice-cream with the treasures of the Mayan culture. It is definately an individual and special ice-cream.

Ingredients are provided on pack and contain: several e-numbers including E471, E 442, E476, E410, E407. Also contains soya. There are 282 calories per bar with 18g of fat, which is actually quite a lot.

I would definately recommend this Magnum to anyone who wants to experience the taste of a what seems like a designer ice-cream!

Summary: A very special ice-cream from Magnum.

I like the dark chocolate ones but not sure that I'd like the spices. The thought of it puts me off a bit.
