Advantages: A delicious blend of chocolate and cinnamon
Disadvantages: Very sickly, claggy ice cream which is far too heavy for my liking
I think I must be the only person in the world who doesn't generally enjoy a Magnum ice cream, I don't know what it is about them but I find the brand far too sickly to enjoy comfortably and very rarely buy them. However, my local grocer was selling packs of Magnum Mini's for the bargain price of 79p so I bought a packet of the new Mayan Mystica variety to try - knowing full well that if I didn't like them (as I probably wouldn't) then at least my granddaughters' would have something to munch on a little more sophisticated than Tesco Value Ice Lollies.
The Mayan Mystica Magnum is basically chocolate ice cream with a rich crisp chocolate coating, which makes it sound like any other Magnum on the market doesn't it? Only Magnum have added 'delicate spices' to this ice cream and it absolutely transforms the flavour.
Now, I'm in two minds as to what I really think about this ice cream. The spice used is blatantly cinnamon, this comes through in both the smell and taste of the Magnum and is absolutely divine. The chocolate coating is wonderfully rich, it melts beautifully in my mouth releasing a strong chocolate flavour into which has been infused the excellent cinnamon. I felt compelled to bite off all the chocolate first before savouring the chocolate ice cream inside, and in the end I was glad I chose to eat it this way as I wasn't keen on the actual ice cream at all.
It's just too claggy. I suspect some would call it creamy, but claggy is definitely the word I would use to describe it. It doesn't help that I'm not a big fan of chocolate ice cream in the first place, but this is such a heavy and sticky ice cream that I felt slightly sick within the first couple of bites of ice cream. The flavour is delicious, the chocolate ice cream isn't too strongly flavoured and the cinnamon really does come through well. There are other spices in there I'm sure but unfortunately the packet I bought was a clear wrapper with no ingredients list (hence the price) so I cannot possibly comment on what they were, I certainly couldn't pick out any other individual spices but behind the cinnamon there was definitely a nice blend of others.
The consistency of the ice cream is just much too heavy for me, and even the wonderful spiciness of the Magnum cannot entice me to eat another. The girls', as expected, love them though and have since munched through the remaining five ice creams so it ended up money well spent after all.
nb. I've just found out since writing this review that these have been available for almost two years, so much for new!
Summary: A delicious flavour but horrible (in my opinion) texture.

- 27/08/09 I haven't seen this one either. Usually new ones are advertised on the telly. |
