Advantages: Luvvly jubbly
Disadvantages: Too small
These walnut whips come individually wrapped in an rather isignificant looking wrapper. It's blue with the words Walnut Whip emblazoned on it and a picture of a walnut and thats about it. The simplicity of the wrapping is soon forgotten once it is removed and the journey begins.
The rippled contoured exterior of the Walnut Whip is like a small path up a mountain, it winds it's way merrily round and round until it reaches the apex, whereupon it merges effortlessly with the large walnut piece which dwells there.
It starts its journey from a reasonably thick chocolate base and though its path is thin and wobbly it helps stop the envious eater from dropping what is a most exquisite taste sensation. At the beginning I liken this to a trip up a mountain, but perhaps I should make that a volcano for inside and hidden away from prying eyes is the walnut whip version of lava. Soft and seductive yet ready to explode through the top at an instant.
The chocolate which houses the geographical confection is made is sweet but not too sweet, it's thickness belies its smoothness. It rise from its humble 2.5 inch diameter base and gradually reduces its diameter until it reaches that just big enough to house half a walnut. As I said the outer shell of this hill of dreams is ridged from base to summit.
There are many schools of thought as to how one should go about devouring such a confection, some claim that the walnut should be left to the end, others claim equally as emphatically that eating the walnut first adds to the excitement of the chocolate that follows. I guess it's a little like the cream egg syndrome each to their own.
My preferred method is a cross between the two, I bite the walnut of taking with it a decent sized piece of chocolate, the textures here are quite extraordinary and the taste is one to die for. Now that my taste buds have been alerted they are soon to partake of another delight. My tongue delves anxiously into the crevice left from my previous bite. I can see the soft white fondant cream enticing me. It is surrounded by a thin layer of chocolate which I try not to disturb.
I was expecting a sudden sugar hit but the cream isn't nearly as sweet as I expected there is however a nice hint of vanilla there, another tongue full confirms my first suspicions PURE MAGIC. Now all that was left was the hollow shell which once housed all that lovely cream. I nibbled the exterior away to be left only with the base which although was still only chocolate was significantly thicker than the rest.
My 40p worth had gone and every penny had been well worth it, they are not a big sweet by any stretch of the imagination, but what they lack in size they make up for in taste, if it is a long time since you had the opportunity to partake of this delicious treat, get your skates on and treat yourself BIG TIME.
Summary: A delicious treat

koshkha - 04/10/06 I think you would be very jealous. I have access to a store that stocks substandard walnut whips (the walnutless ones and the slightly squiffy) in bulk packs for next to nothing! |
