Advantages: Tasty, Light Texture
Disadvantages: Pricey
In our house I am the only one who eats white bread, so it makes sense to buy a small loaf. I can't stand it when you buy a standard size loaf and have to throw half of it away because it is past its best. It's just so wasteful. Unfortunately, though, not all shops sell the smaller white loaves, so all too often I have to buy a larger loaf of bread whether I like it or not. However, one place where I have been able to get smaller loaves of bread is Sainsbury's. They sell one of my favourite breads, Warburtons Milk Roll, and it is this that I shall be reviewing today.
When you see this on the shelf, something about it immediately catches your eye. It's not so much to do with the packaging - although this is quite striking in its own way - but more to do with the fact that the loaf is round and not square as you would normally expect. I don't think I've ever come across a round loaf before! This isn't the only thing that is unique about the loaf, however. Because it is made from milk, it is also full of calcium and is a good source of protein. How many white loaves can claim that…?!
The Milk Roll - or Blackpool Milk Roll as it was originally called - is made by Warburtons. According to their website, they are the largest family owned bakery company in the UK. The company has been making bread since 1876 and is a family business which is now in its fifth generation. The company has become renowned for its high quality breads, rolls and fruited snacks and prides itself on using only the finest ingredients.
The packet is fairly simple and, as you might expect, is made of plastic to ensure lasting freshness. It has the name, 'Milk Roll', in bold blue lettering across the front and this is set against a pale yellow background, which is surrounded by a red oval-shaped ring with the Warburtons emblem at the top. On either side of this is a pattern which looks like slices of the bread all lined up in a row. It is a golden-brown colour and looks very enticing. Both ends of the packet are light blue and have the word 'calcium' repeated over and over. Do you think they're trying to tell us something?!
As you remove the sticky seal and open the packet, you are immediately met by a wonderful smell of freshly baked white bread. In my opinion, this is one of the nicest smells around. If you take a closer look at the loaf, you'll see that it looks like any other white loaf, except for the fact that it is round and the slices are slightly thinner than usual. Its crusts are golden brown and look nice and soft too. The bread also looks finer and more delicate than a standard sliced white loaf.
The taste is not that different to any other white bread, although it is perhaps slightly sweeter. I like the wheaty flavour, as it gives it a freshly baked taste. I also like the softness of the bread and its unusually light texture. It doesn't take much chewing and is not as starchy as some other breads. Warburtons Milk Roll is also ideal for toasting. All you need is a generous dollop of butter and you are away! But beware: slices are quite thin and tend to burn easily when toasted.
Warburtons Milk Roll is one of the healthier white breads around. As I mentioned, milk is one of the main ingredients used to make this bread. This means that it is an excellent source of calcium - an element which is essential for keeping teeth and bones healthy.
Its ingredients include wheat gluten, soya and milk, so do not eat it if you are allergic to any of these.
Each slice (average 18.2g) contains the following nutrition information:
Energy 46 kcal (46 calories)
Protein 2.0g
Carbohydrate 8.2g
Fat 0.5g
Fibre 0.5g
Sodium 0.1g
Calcium 29mg
According to the packet, Milk Roll should be stored in a cool dry place, but ideally not refrigerated. It is, however, suitable for home freezing but should be frozen on the day of purchase.
Overall, I like this bread a lot and will definitely buy it again. Being a smaller loaf, it suits my needs well and tastes like a quality bread. The added milk gives it a lightness that standard white loaves simply cannot match. At 57p, it may be a little pricey, but it is still worth buying. Well done Warburtons!

- 02/06/05 I do like this one, it makes the most wonderfully light and crispy toast. Why the association with Blackpool, though? Is that where it was originally made?

- 30/05/05 My husband comes from Manchester and we buy some every time we go there. Unfortunately 'Warby's' is seldom available in our local supermarket in Essex. Good review... Karen
