Advantages: Delicous, soft and moist
Disadvantages: So tasty you'll want to eat the whole packet
Ah crumpets,. One of my favourite foods especially if I've been having a bad day, a warm crumpet with marmite is the best thing to cheer me up. When I was a little kid I only ever used to eat these when my Nan came round for the day, they were seen as a treat because they are so unhealthy. However now that I've discovered Warburtons Crumpets I really don't feel so bad about eating them regularly, this is because this brand has only got 0.4g of fat in each crumpet compared to the Kingsmill version which contains 0.8g.
I bought a packet of 6 Warburtons Crumpets from Tesco for £0.74 which is a fair price but the Tesco own version only cost £0.65 for 12 crumpets and they only contain 0.3g of fat each so in hindsight maybe this isn't such a good deal, however if you want quality you have to pay for it and these are certainly good quality. They come in a plastic packet which is clear so that you can see the crumpets inside. There is a large orange section on the front on which there is the Warburtons logo and the name of the product. On the back of the packet are the ingredients and the nutritional information.
The ingredients, which I include for those people who suffer from food allergies are:
Wheat Flour, Water, Salt, Raising Agents E450, E500, Yeast, Sugar, Preservative Calcium Propionate
Unfortunately these contain wheat and gluten plus they are produced in a bakery which uses soya, egg and milk. Now then these crumpets are less than 1% fat which is quite good but having compared it with other brands the Tesco version is just as healthy although the Kingsmill one has twice the fat content. So maybe I was a little blinded by this companies advertising when I bought it but never mind. Each crumpet contains on average:
Calories:
100kcal, 5% of your GDA
Sugar:
0.9g, 1% of your GDA
Fat:
0.4g, 1% of your GDA
Saturates:
0.1g, <1% of your GDA
Salt:
1.0g, 17% of your GDA
That doesn't sound so bad does it? But you must bear in mind that this is before any toppings are added. Most people like to add a lot of butter and another topping, jam or marmite so this will increase the fat and possibly sugar if you're using jam. Plus seeing as they already contain 17% of your daily salt allowance they are quite unhealthy, both butter and marmite are high in salt so I hate to think of how bad mine are when I'm done with them. That's the only bad thing about crumpets, they lull you into a false sense of security nutrition wise.
I'm sure that 95% of you will know what a crumpet is but there are probably some people who have never had them before, I feel sorry for these people as they are really missing out but anyway for those of you who don't know a crumpet is it's sort of a cross between a type of bread and a pancake, it's very difficult to describe but it is round and full of little holes into which the butter and other toppings can melt.
These are really simple to cook. They are thin enough to put into the toaster but I don't like doing this as my toaster has a bad habit of jamming them in and not popping back up so I cook them under the grill which only takes about 2-3 minutes, you need to take them out when they start to go a pale brown colour, try not to burn them. I like to get the butter and Marmite ready on the side with the knives whilst the crumpets are cooking that way I can coat them as soon as they're done. This means that the toppings can soak in a lot better which won't work if they're cold. To really enjoy the crumpet experience they need to be spread on whilst the crumpets are still hot.
My favourite toppings are butter with marmite on top because crumpets aren't a very sweet food I like to enhance the savoury flavour, plus I just love Marmite so I suggest this topping for anybody else who loves it, hot crumpets with melted butter and marmite are delicious. However as I have already mentioned this is not very healthy as it does contain a lot of salt. I have also tried blackcurrant on these, without the butter and found it was very nice. This is a good alternative for those who don't want to make the fat or salt levels any higher but remember jam is full of sugar.
These are some of the best crumpets I've had because they are so light and fluffy, some crumpets can be very heavy in texture and that's not nice, these soft light ones are perfect for me. They are lovely and moist, just remember that if you're not going to eat them all at once then you need to keep them airtight to stop them drying out. They are also a bit thicker than other brands such as Tesco so you are getting more for your money.
I think that overall these are my favourite brand of crumpets, because although they are twice the price of the Tesco own brand ones they are a lot softer and more moist. I highly recommend these to anybody who likes crumpets as they are really tasty, 10 out of 10.
Summary: Absolutely delicious, I just love crumpets!
