Advantages: Better than hot cross buns
Disadvantages: Tradition
I picked this up almost accidentally in Somerfield's around Easter time, as I was looking for something a bit sweet.
Now I'm not a massive fan of normal hot cross buns, because it's rare that they have enough raisins/sultanas etc. to taste of anything other than bread to me! This may be because I'm weird and eat them cold without butter!! I do love the smell of toasted ones though.
Anyway, this hot cross bun loaf is a genius idea in my opinion. I don't know how long it's been around for, but it seems pretty new to me.
It's just like a regular sliced loaf, except that it has currants in, and the 'crusts' and edge of the bread in general has that shiny look and white cross patterning of an actual hot cross bun. So how is it better? Well, these are the advantages:
- It's less messy and crumby than cutting a bun open (yes, I'm lazy!)
- You get less dry bread taste as it's thinner and more moist
- It's easier to toast in a toaster
- It tastes nicer raw without butter
I tend to avoid buying loaves of bread because I'm only one person, yet I finished this easily before it was going to go stale (because it was so nice!!). In fairness, it is quite a lot smaller than a standard loaf of bread in terms of height and width. And it tastes exactly like a hot cross bun but better, so I think the only disadvantage here is losing the tradition of actual hot cross buns. However, I'm more than willing to sacrifice that for something so nice :)
It's a reasonable price as far as I can remember, nothing too surprising.
Summary: Try it!

- 01/06/09 These really are tasty, and if I remember correctly even come in different flavours! There is a citrussy one, although not as nice as the original flavour ;) |
