Advantages: Great tasting snack

Disadvantages: None

Now I have to admit that I have never had a liking for Alpen or any muesli type products come to that, so I was taking a bit of a risk when I picked up these Alpen Light Chocolate and Orange bars in Tesco. There was a good chance that I would take one bite, spit it out and that would be that and I would have wasted my money. On the other hand though...

There was something on the attractive box (misty mountains against a blue sky with the glimmer of sunshine was the background!) that really caught my eye and was what was persuaded me, after much deliberations, to pick it up and buy it. There was a few words at the top of the pack stating:

Fewer than 70 calories per bar!

Now this was very tempting especially because just lately I seem to have noticed my weight has just started creeping up a bit but I don't seem to be able to stop snacking! With this number of calories this could be my ideal snack..... but only if it tastes good as well!

However, I always like the combination of chocolate and orange so this did sound promising. There were some other less appealing flavours but the chocolate and orange definitely sounded the best. There was also a very tempting picture on the box which I liked the look of. But, as they say, the proof is in the eating so I quickly opened the individual wrapper and took a look.

The bar does look very similar to the picture on the box although, if I was being picky, I would have to say there is not quite as much chocolate drizzled over the top as I expected. However there is enough and it does help to liven up the appearance of an otherwise quite bland and innocuous looking bar. You do soon notice a very enticing orange aroma as well.

On bite into the bar and I have to admit I am sold. This really is rather delicious and has a lovely strong taste of zingy orange. The bar is quite chewy and is just the right consistency too - not too dry but not too moist. You also feel that it is quite filling and that one of these for a snack will last quite nicely thank you! It does also seem slightly larger than many similar snacks too. I am actually eating a bar as I write this bit and I really am enjoying the mix of flavours and that strong taste of orange!

It also seems to be an extremely healthy bar too! Each 21 gram bar actually only contains 60 calories and there is only 1.0 gram fat. On the packet it states that these bars contain less sugar and half the fat of regular Alpen bars (which I have not tried). They are also high in fibre and prebiotic which aids healthy digestion.

These Alpen Light bars come as a pack of five and are all individually wrapped. It cost around £1.75 from Tesco, which I think, is a bit expensive so I will be keeping my eye out for any special offers!

I am really glad that I took a risk and bought these because I am now sold! They taste great, they are filling and they are healthy too As far as I am concerned, it's an all round winner!

Summary: A healthy and tasty snack

I'm the same as you. I don't like Alpen breakfast cereal much, but the cereal bars are lovely.

Mmm - they sound good - not keen on Alpen muesli as it is too sweet though
