Advantages: Taste great, low in calories, low cost
Disadvantages: None for me
As you may know I am currently trying to find decent cereal bars that I can take to work to keep me going through my shifts merchandising.
When I was looking for the Quaker Oat Bars - which incidentally are delicious - I noticed the Alpen Light Bars and decided to try those as well and I am so glad that I did.
The ones that I bought were the Alpen Light Summer Fruits Bars which cost £1.50 for a box containing six bars. They were also available in orange and chocolate and apple and sultana flavours. The chocolate one doesn't sound my sort of thing but I may well try the apple one.
The box to look out for is pale blue with the word Alpen written vertically and Light and summer fruits horizontally. There is then a picture of one of the bars together with a selection of fruit. The information of the front of the box tells us that each bar contains less than 70 calories, that they are prebiotic to aid healthy digestion and that they are low in saturated fat.
Each of the six bars is individually wrapped and weighs just over 20g so they aren't particularly big.
I unwrapped one and was impressed with the look. It looked light and oaty and the pieces of fruit were clearly visible. There was also a zig zag of white across the top of the bar. It smelled healthy and slightly fruity.
I took a bite and was immediately impressed it was light and chewy and the grain and the fruit were both apparent in the taste. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and even though it wasn't very big it was enough to relieve my hunger and to bring my blood sugar back up.
So what exactly is in the bar to make it taste so good? Well it is 42% cereal which is made up of wheat, oats and rice. It is also 30% prebiotic Oligofructose. Now you may be like me and be thinking what one earth is Oligofructose? Well I decided to look it up on that source of all wisdom the Internet!
Apparently Oligofructose is a type of sugar molecule which is not digested in the small intestine, therefore adds very little to blood glucose, which is great for me as a diabetic. However, it is broken down in the colon which is where the prebiotic bit comes in as it contributes to the health of the colon. So now you know!
The fruits that are contained in the bar are apple, strawberry, raspberry and cranberry and the mix of the tastes is really very nice indeed. I have to admit that I couldn't taste the apple but I would assume that it did add to the moistness of the bar. I could, however, taste the red berries although I couldn't distinguish between them.
The white zig zag stripe along the top of the bar is yoghurt and I initially thought that I wouldn't be too keen although I do like yoghurt itself. I was pleasantly surprised though as it definitely added to the taste.
The nutritional value of a bar is as follows:
Calories 59
Protein 1.2g
Carbohydrate 11.9g
Of which sugars 4.8g
Fat 0.8g
Of which saturates 0.3g
Fibre 4.7g
Salt 0.1g
All in all I was very impressed with these bars. They taste good, the texture is excellent, they keep me going when I am working and the cost is reasonable. What more could I want?
Summary: A great discovery for me
