Advantages: Lof fat, low calories, tasty
Disadvantages: Artificial preservatives and colourings, small size
I am on a diet at the moment, but am just calorie counting not following a particular plan. However last night in Tesco's I saw Weight Watcher's Apple Crumble Slices reduced from their usual £1.24 down to 31p on the grabbit quick shelf, so I did!
Each cake contains 1 ½ weight watchers points, or 90 calories and 2g of fat for those not on the plan. This is fairly good going for a sweet snack however you look at it. However they're not huge as each one measures about 6cm by 2.5cm by 2.5cm. You get six in a packet, working out at just over 20p per slice. While I don't think this is bad value, its not a bargain either. The cakes are also suitable for vegetarians.
The cakes are in a plastic tray to protect them, then the entire tray is sealed in a plastic wrapper. This is then put inside a cardboard box. Once you've opened the plastic packet the cakes dry out very quickly, so you need to wrap the packet back up in cling film or similar.
The box states that these bars are a 'Light apple sponge slices, layered with Bramley apple jam on a delicate pastry base and lightly topped with an oaty crumble.' The little slices are an apple and cinnamon sponge, with a layer of apple jam on top and then a thin crackly sort of pastry icing. This is studded with oats and sugar and makes the bar seem crumbly. I wasn't expecting a proper crumble, but a cake, and I was not disappointed with this.
The apple flavour is very sweet but quite authentic, and the jam adds moisture. The overpowering sweetness of the jam tasted more artificial than the sponge in my opinion, however as a whole it was very pleasant. I would not know this was a diet cake except for the fact its smaller than most cake slices. Reading the box though there are a lot of additives and preservatives, which does put me off.
While these slices are nice, they are not filling, just very sweet. Personally I don't eat many biscuits or cakes anyway, so for my treat I would rather have some Options hot chocolate or a handful of chocolate raisins.
Summary: Good treat for those on a diet, but only if you can stick to one.
