Advantages: Low fat dessert

Disadvantages: Sponge base was terrible

Looking longingly at the frozen desserts whilst shopping in Tesco last week, and knowing that I shouldn't be eating cream laden things I spotted Weight Watchers Banoffee Deserts on offer, at £1 instead of £1.39 so I popped a box in the trolley.

What are Banoffee Desserts?

According to the box "Rich toffee and Banana mousse on a moist toffee sponge with sweet toffee sauce and delicate curls."

And what did I find in the box?

Two plastic pots, with a plastic film sealed lid, one looked nicer than the other as it had neatly piped topping covered in pale chocolate curls. The other looked as if it melted before being frozen! I could see different coloured mousse, most being a pale creamy colour like vanilla ice cream, and trickles of toffee sauce down the outside of the dessert.

I followed the instructions, and after removing the film seal left to defrost at room temperature for 10 minutes. I served the desserts in the pot as suggested, to try and remove it would have been difficult and probably the sauce would have been left behind and the whole dessert would have looked a mess. Saves washing up!

What did it taste like?

There was a definite taste of banana, and you could taste the toffee sauce, but I wasn't sure I could taste toffee mousse. It was smooth and creamy and rather more ice cream like than mousse, but perhaps it needed more than 10 minutes defrosting, although I liked it in that form, and would eat it again with only a short defrost time.

I pushed my spoon right down to the bottom, after a few spoonfuls of mousse and found a darker layer, I had forgotten there was sponge. The truth was if I hadn't read it was sponge I wouldn't have known what it was! It looked exactly like a very soggy cardboard box. It was damp, bendy, and tasteless. I managed to eat the rest of it but made sure that my last few mouthfuls were of mousse and toffee sauce!

Thoughts?

It made a quick and sweet end to my dinner. At the reduced price of 50p a dessert it wasn't too expensive. The mousse was more like ice cream than mousse, but never the less was nice. The box said "Now with more Toffee sauce", there could have been more for my liking, heavens knows what it was like before! I didn't like the sponge, a layer of digestive biscuit crumbs would have improved it.

Useful Information

Good for people watching their weight who want a treat, it had 3 points value and 170 calories and contained 3.6% fat. The information on the front of the box is misleading, as it has both information of 100g and the pot, so looks as if it has 4.4% fat when it is less.

It does contain gluten, wheat, barley, egg, milk and soya so isn't suitable for everyone and there is a warning it may contain nuts. But there are no artificial flavours or colours. My box would keep in the freezer until December 2008, so has a reasonable freezer life. Made by Weight Watchers from Heinz, you are assured of their quality control.

I noticed ingredients like guar gum and locust bean gum, but these are in a great many products these days, and seem to help fill your tum without increasing the calories.

Would I buy it again?

Probably if on offer, but I think I may try the Creamy strawberry cheesecake advertised on the box!

Summary: Banana and toffee flavoured dessert which is low in calories
