Advantages: Tastes lovely, a low point alternative to mashed potato, easy to cook

Disadvantages: You don't get much for 2 points!

Now, I'm not one for frozen mash. In fact I don't think I'd ever eaten it until I saw that Weight Watchers have developed their own, which is lower in points than the usual creamy mash I dollop on my plate.

I wasn't expecting much from it if I'm honest, it's just that since I joined Weight Watchers I've gone on a mission to try as many of their foods as possible for the simple reason that it's handy to have ready-pointed food in the kitchen for times when I can't be bothered to cook from scratch.

I cooked some this evening to go with a nice piece of salmon and some vegetables and was surprised at how tasty this mash was. The mash comes in small round patties and one serving equals three patties, this will account for 2 Weight Watchers points. You can either pop the patties into a saucepan and heat while mixing, or microwave them for a couple of minutes making sure you stir regularly. Cooking by either of these methods will result in a pile of fluffy looking pale mash - it doesn't look great really, but scooped onto the plate with the rest of my meal it looks fairly appetising.

I gingerly took a small forkful and was really surprised at how nice it was. The mash tastes creamy and surprisingly natural, you can obviously taste that it's not real fresh mashed potato but it's hardly synthetic at all and is richer than I had imagined it would be.

The mash is flavoured with spring onion and this is a nice addition to the potato, there are small flecks of onion which gives it a nice homely look. It's a natural spring onion flavour which is probably what gives the mash the rounded flavour it has.

I really enjoyed this mash. I found it easy to cook (well, heat!) and very tasty as part of my meal. To be honest there wasn't much there for 2 points, I could have had 200g of plain mashed potato for these points but a huge dollop of unflavoured mash doesn't compare favourably to this highly seasoned and interesting mash.

I'd definitely recommend it to those of you who are following the Weight Watchers plan because these patties make portion control very easy, and is a low point way of having a bit of mashed potato with your dinner without all the extra calories butter and milk brings. For anyone else, well I don't know to be honest. You'd want more than the small pile that the 3 patties produce, and considering the mash is priced quite highly at £1.59 a bag I don't think it would really be cost effective.

It's nice though, of course I'd rather a huge pile of fresh buttery creamy mash but this definitely passes all expectations and is well worth trying.

Summary: I used to be such a food snob, now I've realised not all frozen mash is bad!
