Advantages: Low points value, very reasonable price
Disadvantages: Jar only serves two
I saw this Tikka sauce from the Weight Watchers range on special offer in Asda recently for £1 a jar, it usually retails at around £1.29 according to their website. As I love a good curry but can't really have them on the plan without wasting loads of points, I decided to try it and see if it was really as tasty as a normal tikka sauce would be.
Half of the 350g jar contains 130 calories and 0.7g of saturated fat which equates to 2 points per half jar serving. I liked the fact that the jar is intended to make two servings as with only me and my husband to feed we would usually split a much bigger jar or have leftovers.
I have tried this sauce with both chicken breast and with quorn pieces as my husband is veggie. With both I have to say I was really impressed with the flavour, the texture and the consistency. It is a really simple product, you just tip it over your choice of meat or veggies and simmer for around 20 mins. I have added mushrooms to it to fill it out a bit with the quorn and it worked perfectly well.
You can tell while cooking that there is very little fat in this sauce, no oily residue round the pan and it does stick so you have to keep stirring it but thats no bother to me!
The taste is great although to my mind it is a little on the mild side. I like my curries to have a bit of a kick to them and I think this could handle a bit more spice, but the main tomatoey curry flavour is very nice. You can taste all the curry spices too and the jar confirms that it does indeed contain the basics such as cumin, curry paste, paprika and coriander.
The colour is a bright orange but not so bright as to be neon like some other sauces can be. It does retain a nice thick consistency which I watered down slightly with some water as we had naan breads and I wanted extra sauce for dipping.
It is very difficult to tell from the finished product that you are eating such a low fat version of an old classic and to my mind thats what I want from this kind of product. I do not want to feel like I am being deprived of anything. I ate this with a measured quantity of rice for 3 points and a weight watchers naan for 1.5, with 1 point added for the quorn pieces this meant I enjoyed a fabulously tasty curry meal for 7.5 points! I am very pleased with that!
I would highly recommend this sauce to anyone following the WW plan or even just if you are following a low fat diet, I even think it is worth the full price tag - but if you see it on offer even better! I am now going to try their other sauces, I spotted a korma version which is next on my list to try.
Summary: A great option for those wanting a low fat curry, stops you feeling like you are missing out!
