Weight Watchers Shepherd's Pie
by kama0529
For those of us who are constantly on a diet, the constant battle to find convenience food which is tasty and yet also low calorie and low fat is a pain in the bum! I think, over the years, I have tried all of the Weight Watchers range of convenience foods - some of which has been fine, but some of which I have rejected. Unfortunately, ... Weight Watchers Shepherd's Pie is one of those products which I have rejected because, but quite frankly, it really isn't very good at all!
In terms of price, the Shepherd's Pie cost just £1 from Morrisons. It came frozen and was to be cooked from frozen, either in the microwave or in the oven (for best results, I would say stick it in the oven for about 25 minutes). The box reveals that the product contains less than 2% fat and just 186 kcals - and for those following the Weight Watchers diet plan, it also gives you the amount of points (2).
So......meal cooked...I sat down to eat - looking forward to what was descried to be "savoury gravy with lean mince, carrots & peas topped with mashed potato". Firstly, its worth mentioning that the portion is pretty small....I mean, I know I was on a diet, but I still needed food and fuel and a portion of food with just 186 kcals for a main meal, really isn't very substantial. The main issue was the depth of the pie - which was very thin....just a thin layer of the mince concoction which was topped with an equally thin layer of the mash potato.
The taste itself was fairly cardboard. It tasted overly processed, partlicularly the mashed potato element of this dish. It tasted a little bit like Smash potato - or as I like to refer to it as "fake potato". While the mince part was fairly tasty, there just wasn't enough of it and the overwhelming taste was of the mashed potato which, as well as tasting synthetic, was also quite sloppy in consistency.
Its not that this dish is horrible......it's just that its not very nice. It would be far better to have a piece of chicken and fresh salad instead. It may be worth keeping a packet of it in the freezer for emergencies, but to be honest, there are better frozen diet meals out there. Read the complete review |
