Advantages: Delicious sponge and a nice chocolate topping

Disadvantages: Disappointing chocolate curls

I am always looking out for low fat treats and recently have been craving chocolate, something I have been very strict about just lately. So I was happy to find that my local Morrisons have widened their range of Weight Watchers cakes to include their Mini Chocolate Cup Cakes, I've eaten these before and enjoyed them so I popped a box into my trolley for a treat after my dinner.

I find Weight Watchers cakes to be rather hit and miss, especially their chocolate varieties, but these are honestly very good cakes. They aren't as mini as I had thought they would be, being big enough for two hearty bites anyway! They look very nice, coming in a small cake case which peels away easily from the sponge cake. Once unrobed you can see that the sponge is a rich brown and the Belgian chocolate topping looks lovely and thick, the cake looks absolutely delicious.

When I bite into the Mini Cup Cake I'm instantly annoyed that the chocolate on the top isn't as thick as sneaky Weight Watchers would have you believe, it's actually a very thin layer of crunchy chocolate rather than the thicker icing-type chocolate I was expecting. What they've done is 'painted' the chocolate down the sides of the cake a little to give the impression that you're getting lots more than you really are.

The sponge cake itself is very tasty, it has a fairly rich chocolate flavour which isn't exactly like fuller fat chocolate sponge but in my chocolate depraved eyes is very reminiscent of it. Perhaps I'd like it to taste a little more 'cocoa-ey' (if indeed that is a word!) but there is nothing bland about the cake whatsoever. It has a good consistency too being soft and springy, melting in my mouth along with the chocolate on top to create a mushy chocolate flavoured paste - which sounds awful I know but is actually quite delicious.

The Belgian chocolate on the top is OK, not excellent quality but certainly creamy enough to warrant its addition to the cake. It's not a high class Belgian chocolate obviously, after all these cakes only cost around £1.69 a box, but let's face it; lower caste Belgian chocolate is still Belgian chocolate, especially when you're dieting!

The Cup Cakes are topped with a very stingy amount of chocolate curls, which in my case were crushed up to resemble nothing more than over sized chocolate sprinkles. To be honest these don't add much in the way of flavour to the cake and really did nothing but get on my nerves as they dropped from the cake and made a mess on my blouse!

Each Mini Chocolate Cup Cake contains just 87 calories and 4.3g of fat, equating to just 1 1/2 Weight Watchers points if like me you are following the plan. You get nine in a box and providing you swap the cardboard box for an airtight container they will keep well for a few days, although to be honest they don't really get the chance to go off in my kitchen as I eat them up too quickly!

Summary: A lovely chocolate cake from Weight Watchers.
