Advantages: Taste good, light on the waistline

Disadvantages: Get stuck in your teeth

My earliest memories of Wotsits are of scoffing them at numerous kids parties, watched in envy by some of the other children who were under strict instructions to avoid them for fear that the orange colouring would send them hyper! Come to think of it, I'm not entirely sure why I was allowed to indulge in these supposedly hyper inducing snacks, maybe my mum just wasn't aware of what I was scoffing!

Last week, after a multipack bag of these snacks caught my eye whilst food shopping, I couldn't resist buying some and they definitely didn't disappoint!

The concept of a Wotsit is really very simple. They are basically cheesy puffs that melt in your mouth. Bright orange in colour, they resemble something that should taste disgusting, but in fact they are very yummy! The multipack that I bought contained all cheese flavour Wotsits but they do come in other flavours such as beef and prawn cocktail, although you can usually only buy these in mixed bags.

To me, however, Wotsits have to be cheese and cheesy flavoured they are indeed! The only complaint that I have about the taste of these is that they can taste a bit artificial, especially after eating a whole packet so if you were expecting real cheese flavourings these may not be to your taste.

Their texture also takes a bit of getting used to, as they can seem a bit soggy at times and really get stuck in your teeth which can be extremely annoying, not to mention embarrassing, when munching these in public.

That said, one of the best things about Wotsits is that their texture is so light that they're also very light in fat compared to other crisps. A standard sized bag will provide just 95 calories and 0.7g of saturated fat which isn't bad compared to other snacks. They are also, as stressed on the packet, baked and not fried, which, if nothing else, will make you feel as if you're making a healthier choice by choosing these.

As for the bright orange colouring, any worries that this meant they were extremely high in additives and E numbers can now be put to rest. The back of the packet informs us that the snacks are coloured by paprika, giving them their neon like glow! This is reassuring especially as the crisps are a favourite of kids everywhere.

The packet reflects the target audience of the crisps as although adults can, and do, enjoy them, they seem to be aimed mainly at kids. This is easy to see by the bright colours of the packet, as well as the images of the Wotsits floating around on the front. The multipack bags are easy to find in the crisp aisle as they are made by Walkers and easily distinguishable from the other packs by their typical blue and orange colours.

A multipack containing 6 packs will cost you around £1.30 depending on where you buy it, but they are also often on offer at prices like three multipacks for £3.00 which is good especially if you want to stock up.

Overally, my regression back to my childhood with Wotsits was definitely a good one. If you want a light snack for a treat these are definitely a good option!

Maybe the ingredients have changed over the years, but I do know that eating 10 packets on the trot did very odd things to me in 1997...
