Advantages: Tastes good, cheap

Disadvantages: Leaves your fingers orange

What's small, a funny colour and smells of cheese?

A cheesy corn puff sounds really unappealing, the smell isn't too great, and after eating a pack you're left with orange fingers. So why are Wotsits so popular?

There are so many different flavours of crisps available these days, from the ever-steady Ready Salted, to the more unusual flavours such as Vanilla Ice Cream. Just sometimes though you want an old favourite. Something not boring. Like Ready Salted, Cheese and Onion or Salt and Vinegar. Wotsits are ideal. A light crisp, full of flavour and not likely to ruin your appetite.

There has been an advert on TV recently with schoolkids rapping along about how great Wotsits are, with a tag line "What sits on your Wotsits?". As adverts go, it's right up there with the worst of them, but as the old saying goes, any press is good press, and it was with this annoying tune running through my head that I came to pick out a multipack of these cheesy wonders to share with the kids. Tesco.com currently have these for 19p per packet, or 87p for a six-pack.

The smell is instantly recognisable as a Wotsit smell, which is understandable as they are so well known. For those who have never smelt Wotsits before, I'd say that you would be hard-pushed to know that these were a cheese flavour crisp. The smell is a little tangy, though not at all displeasant. I doubt that anyone would be put off of eating Wotsits because of their smell, though I'd also say that people are unlikely to pick them out because they smell so good!

The crisps themselves are small, phallic shaped corn puffs, each a few centimetres long and vivid orange in colour. Very different from what you'd expect a crisp to look like.

The taste is unusual too. Strong, yet not overwhelming, there is a definite tang to the crisps, but it is a mild tang, and leaves a pleasant taste in the mouth. Because these are puffs of corn, the cri
sps melt in your mouth if you don't chew them, which is another advantage of Wotsits. Crisps are often crunchy and jagged in the mouth - Not always the best thing if you have an ulcer, a brace or a tongue bar (speaking from experience on all of this by the way!). A wotsit, however, can sit there and melt, and is never any bother when swallowed, with no jaggedy edges, and no unpleasantness.

The packets are 21g each, and have a whopping 110kcal per pack, which is a fair amount for what is essentially a light snack. That being said, it's gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians.

Overall, Wotsits are great. Cheaper than normal flavoured crisps, good tasting and loved by all of the family (including 14 month old Aaliyah!) The downside is that they have a tendency to give you orange fingers, which makes eating them at work a nightmare as customers tend to study your hands very closely when they are orange in appearance!

**** - One star is lost for that damn orange!

Lastly, you thought that Vanilla Ice Cream was a strange flavour (also brought to us via Walker's Monster Munch range)? Think about it. Cheese flavour crisps? Eurgh!

Not my choice of crisps to eat rather have the normal crunchier crisps.
