I have always been a fan of chewing gum. I used to love hubba bubba and bubble king bars. I even think one of the reasons I liked screwballs so much was due to the fact they have a lovely bit of bubble gum tucked away at the end of them. In my line of work I interact a lot with members of the public and I always like to have fresh breath. My dentists suggested that chewing gum would be a better option than sucking mints and given my predisposition for gum I was happy to take his advice on board.

What is Wrigleys Extra?

Wrigleys Extra is a sugarfree gum that was first introduced in America in 1984. It soon became one of America's favourite chewing gums and has since been rolled out to other markets around the globe. In the UK Wrigleys extra is available in a variety of flavours including peppermint, cool breeze, fire and ice. I have also heard that the product is the sponsor of Holloyoaks TV show in the UK.

What is the gum made of?

Chewing gum is a confectionary product that is traditionally made from a product called chilce. Over the years the use of chilce has been replaced by a type of rubber. According to a pack of peppermint the ingredients include sweeteners sorbitol, maltitol, maltitol syrup, gum base, humectant, glycerine and thickener. Safe to say it is basically the same type of rubber used to make inner tyres but with a dash of flavouring.

Currently a five pack of this gum would set you back in the region of £1.43. There are 10 gum pieces per pack with the dimensions of each piece being 2cmx 0.8cm x .04cm on average.

What are the benefits of chewing gum?

Apart from my dentists advice there are deemed to be a number of benefits to be had from chewing gum. Wrigleys have been doing research into this area over the past two decades and they claim that it has the following positive effects:
* Helps with weight management
* Helps relieve Stress
* Helps to increase concentration and alertness
* Improved oral health

My opinion

I would regularly buy this brand of chewing gum and in particular the peppermint flavour. The flavouring from the chewing gum is immense and very strong. It gives a superb feeling of freshness and the minty flavour is so strong you even get a fresh cooling effect in your nostrils. The gum itself is of a very good texture and could be chewed for about 5-10 minutes before the flavour is totally lost.

One disappointing point about the chewing gum is that's very hard to blow any bubbles with this brand so from that perspective it's a bit more of a grown up brand. After chewing for a few minutes the gum sometimes leaves me with a bloated feeling and I feel full up. This would support their claim that the gum helps with weight management. Overall the gum is full of nice peppermint flavour. Its leaves the mouth feeling minty and fresh which gives me a nice sense of confidence when I have to get close to people through work or in social settings. I would definitely recommend this product. To some people more than others but I find it always useful to have a pack of this stuff nearby for any emergencies.
