Yarg is a cheese of Cornish extraction which has managed to make its way into the supermarkes - well, Sainsburys at any rate. Its an unusual cheese with an equally unusual name, and its certainly worth investigating if, like me, you are a bit of a cheese feitishist. The first thing you are likely to notice about Yarg when you unwrap it from the less-than-traditional plastic bag is that it has a curious green and white rind. I discovered Yarg on my first visit to Cornwall way back in the eighties. At that time it was only available in a limited number of shops and restaurants and in Cornwall alone. So what is Yarg? It's a wonderful Cornish cheese which according to the locals was first made hundreds of years ago, probably in mediaeval times. What makes this cheese unique is that it is wrapped in nettles. It was not until the early eighties that this cheese began to be sold commercially and was given the name Yarg. My husbands devotion to cheese is legendary and has escalated to new heights since my father was diagnosed as diabetic. This means that, when eating out, Dad's choice of dessert is limited to non-sugary foods, usually fresh fruit salad or cheese and biscuits. Being something of a cheese fan himself, Dad normally plumps for the latter. So, Mr. Nikkisly has the best of both worlds.
