Advantages: Tasty and healthy
Disadvantages: Sweet varieties can be misleading
Whilst the majority of fruit yoghurts and Muller types aren't particularly healthy they hide their fattening qualities under a veneer of the word "yoghurt" which for some reason is generally assumed to always be healthy, throw in some sweet flavours and it's not difficult to see why they are so popular.
Don't get me wrong, I like those calorific fruity and chocolatey yoghurts but it's the plain natural yoghurt that's the real thing when it comes to healthiness.
Personally I like a thick yoghurt, one where you need to grip the spoon with two hands to infiltrate the top layer and from then on battle with it's large congealed wobbly pieces, trying to get them out of the pot and into your mouth safely. Thin, watery yoghurts just don't do it for me and they certainly don't suit the new recipe that I'm going to recommend!
With yoghurt forming the base of things like raita and being optional way of cooling down a spicy meal such as chile con carne, I've been looking at it's savioury qualities recently.
I came up with this the other day.
Basically you use around 300ml of yoghurt, that's 3/4 of one of the very big pots. Put it into a bowl and make sure it's the thick variety. Open a can of tuna and drain it except for a smidgin of oil, throw that into the bowl, add a large spoon of mayonnaise (not actually necessary if you are on a diet), add half a can of green peas, half a can of sweet corn and half a can of red beans. Mix it all up and add a few splashes of soya sauce.
This is a filling meal and using those measurements it would easily fill two people, maybe even 3, it's cheap and takes less than 5 minutes to make unless you are battling away with a bad tin opener.
Without yoghurt, these ingredients wouldn't be anywhere as filling and particularly if they are cheaper end budget products, you'd find the a bit dry to consume alone.
Summary: Give the tuna yoghurt a go!
