I quite enjoy fish, any fish to be honest even though most of it carries a heavy stench it doesn't put me off. Fish in many forms I find quite tasty and satisfying so when in Iceland the other day when I seen boxes of Young's Admiral's Pie for just 75p a box I bought a few to give them a try.

The box is a lovely blue colour with a stunning ocean at the top. The brand name Young's is at the top on a bergundy and navy background. Theres a picture of this Admiral's Pie accompanied by some greens and I have to be honest the picture does it justice in the looks department - real mouthwatering looking pie with clear chunks of fish. We are told that this Admiral's Pie is Britains Favourite Ready Meal and it is a natural source of Omega 3. The pie consists of 'Succulent pieces of wild alaska pollock fillets in a deliciously rich and creamy butter sauce topped with mashed potato'.

Each pie contains;
342 calories
6.9g sugar
15.5g fat
7.8g saturates
2.3g salt

The meal comes in a cardboard box - sitting in a black microwavable tray with a film placed on top which needs to be either pierced or removed for cooking. You can either cook it in the microwave or the oven but the oven takes alot longer. The tray it comes in is an oval shape and isn't that big nor deep really - to be honest it's quite disapointing to look at due to it's size -but I'm meant to be cutting down portion sizes so I should of been pleased. But like they say 'size doesn't matter' - so I was hoping this would be the case with this meal.

The mashed potato on top is thick, fluffy and quite light yet I found it quite filling too. It's fluffier if cooked in the oven as I find it tends to harden slightly if microwaved. It's a lovely bright orange in the middle from cheddar cheese added on top - this for me adds no flavour but emphasises the colour of the dish. I think I ate the majority of my pie before I came to a piece of fish - I wouldn't call it a succulent piece of Pollock fillet though that's a bit extreme. The three pieces I did have were tasty but the pie needed more - alot more - to make it an actual 'fish pie' - there was hardly any fish inside and the pieces that were there were extremely small. I was expecting the tasty looking chunks that were on the front of the box so to only have just a few stingy pieces was gutting. The creamy butter sauce surprised me however, it was creamy and quite thick and really mixed in lovely with the mashed potato. The butter sauce isn't extremely flavoursome - in fact the whole pie for me is quite a subtle dish with next to no smell and weak flavours but enough for me to enjoy them. The fish was the only let down - which for a 'fish pie' is terrible but I would still buy these at 75p a box as one pie does actually make a sort of satisfying meal for one - especially with some veggies on the side.

If the pie was to increase it's price there is no way I would buy these as the fish - or should I say lack of it is really disheartening when you are expecting to eat a 'fish pie'. For somebody that would like to try fish but not have to put up with a stinking fishy aroma and taste for that matter this would make a perfect beginners meal to give it a little try and introduce yourself to fish in a meal without the pongs and extreme fishy tastes.

Although this pie isn't the most flavoursome and I suppose you could say it's quite dull and plain I actually really enjoy them - I would probably have been more pleased though if it was called a potato pie and was surprised by the odd piece of fish as this pie really is mostly potato. Even though I enjoy them I can't give them the full five stars - the lack of fish is a real disapointment and I do enjoy tasty and flavoursome meals whereas this is just a 'decent' meal if you ask me.

I always find these to be extremely filling, and even as cheap as £1 in corner shops.
