Advantages: Cheap, well-blended
Disadvantages: Too coconut-y for some
Launched: 2008
Group: floral
:: Introduction ::
I have a fixation of coconut-y smells and that goes back to an old memory, a bottle of coconut eau de toilette spray I bought on an especially hot summer day in Paris, so before I left for Mauritius I had to have something similar with me, at the end of the day I was going on a tropical island. I've heard Avon launched a new eau de toilette called Tahitian Holiday and I thought it might just do the trick.
:: The bottle ::
The bottle design of Tahitian Holiday is fairly standard, it's an elongated round teardrop-shaped flask with a tall cylindric cap. We then have the almost compulsory translucent turquoise bottle colour with matching turquoise - chocolate brown floral packaging.
:: The fragrance ::
Top notes: cyclamen, ginger
A soft, creamy fruity coconut-y start that slowly develops into a more powdery, intense white floral note that reminds me of freesia with some light bitter - citrus nuances. It's fresh and sweet in equal measure though the freshness only lasts for about 20 minutes before the sweeter tones take over.
Middle notes: tiare flower, jasmine, coconut
Surely enough, after about half an hour Tahitian Holiday develops more intense notes that to me me smells like a blend of coconut and clean musk mixed with an amora of slightly burnt vanilla candy or praline. The hint of floral is fairly sweet in a candy rather than a floral kind of way. A fluffy, sweet mixture that's surprisingly not overpowering at all. The fruity fresness of the coconut adds a ligthening effect to the notes here which will last approximately two - three hours.
Base notes: monoi, coconut, musk
It's the final phase that I like Tahitian Holiday the most. With the fluffy sweetness gone, we get a clean, light musky and slightly powdery
- woody base that lies on a smooth and discreet layer of milky coconut. Tahitian 'monoi' is simply blend of refined coconut oil and extract of the gardenia flower, though unfortunately my nose didn't capture this gentle, white floral accord. What is there, is the initial fresh and exotic tone except it being a lot more subdued and serene.
:: Conclusion ::
Overall, I'm happy I'd bought Tahitian Holiday, it's light and easy to take for those far away holidays. It's inexpensive but well-blended, summery and exotic without being cheap smelling. It also went really well with my similarly exotic smelling Hawaiian Tropic sun lotion. An excellent choice to go out and splash it on for those evening parties / dinners after a day on the beach. The one downside is that the coconut fragrance seems to drown out everything else, so it may not be for you if you are after a more-balanced, floral type of scent.
:: Price / Availability ::
The normal RRP for this scent was £15 though I bought the 50ml Eau de Toilette from ebay for less than half price. It can also be bought from Avon online or from a representative.
Thanks for reading.

- 04/06/09 Ouch!!! No. Coconut just doesn't do it for me at all. I think I generally dislike any foody smells in my body care products, apart perhaps from citrus zest/oils which can work well in some combination, possibly because the skin is not edible so it's not really a foody smell to my sub-conscious nose.
I smelled this when I was testing Avon things a while back and it really just didn't work for me at all. |
