Can anyone say Thierry Mugler Angel? That's exactly what this bottle reminds me off, rip off just like its creator. It is quite heavy to carry actually, I thought it may be light and it has yet another rip off feature. A ring you can pull out of the top just like Vera Wang princess. Call me picky but I hate copy cats. The opening notes of the perfume seems to be to be very manufactured. The pear notes and fruity scents seem to remind me of the smells you put in gumdrops. Good for foods bad for perfumes. These tones are there throughout underpinning the fragrance. Yuck! When the fragrance gets into full bloom it has floral tones accented with plum which yet again are quite synthetic. These kind of scents tend to be aimed towards the younger generation, so I suppose sophistication wasn't a factor and the reason its so synthetic is because it needs to be fairly low budget. The perfume doesn't have much wear either about fifty to sixty minutes in I can feel it fade. The punk rock style that was advertised also did not follow through in the scent. It just didn't have the edge. A failure all around.
I would describe this scent as young, fresh and flirty. It's a fun scent and is probably more suited to the younger generation. It does smell quite youthful.
The bottle is really funky and it features a studded ring around the neck that can be removed and used! The perfume is a fruity floral. It smells really fresh and uplifting. The notes are mainly floral notes but I like the fact that there's a hint of Musk in there too. When you first spray the perfume it does smell quite strong. However, the scent needs a few minutes for it to settle before you can detect the beautiful floral notes. The floral notes come together to deliver a gorgeous daytime scent. It's quite a summery scent but I wear it all year round as it doubles up as an evening scent too - I just top it up when i'm ready to go out!
The scent is quite long lasting, it has great staying power and it lasts most of the day (and night!). As the scent settles down (give it a few hours) the Musk starts to show. It's a lovely Musk - not too strong but not too weak either. I think it's more of a White Musk myself.
I find this scent to be great for teens and younger women. I'm 26 and it suits me fine. It smells more like a designer scent, not something that Avril Lavigne would come up with! It lasts ages too so it's good value. I love the star shaped bottle aswell, it's gorgeous and the ring is a nice added touch!
Avril Lavigne is a Canadian singer born in 1984, known for hits such as Complicated and Girlfriend. More recently, she has joined the increasingly long list of celebrities who have their own line of fragrances. In 2009, her first perfume Black Star was released, followed by Forbidden Rose in 2010.
I am not a fan of Avril. She's okay, but I've never bought her CDs and tend to regard her as yet another rather over-rated pop star. However, I had about £15's worth of Boots Clubcard points and wanted to treat myself to another celebrity fragrance. I like sweet, fruity perfumes and have bought quite a few in the last few years including J-Lo's Glow and all of Christina Aguilera's range. However, I have found they all smell lovely, but the smell doesn't last long enough.
Avril Lavigne's Black Star fragrance was in the right price range (I seem to remember it being just under £15 at Boots) and it had a lovely smell to it, so I bought it, hoping I would have finally found the perfect fragrance! I bought the 30ml one, but this is also available in 10ml, 15ml, 50ml and 100ml eau de parfum as well as a shower gel, body lotion and spray deodorant.
The packaging is lovely. The box is decorated with shiny silver squares and in the middle is the name of the perfume in a hot pink square. It is quite a sturdy bottle too, which I use to keep the perfume in to protect it and it looks stylish on the dressing table. The bottle itself is see-through glass in a star shape with a black screw-top lid which looks like a black star from above. There is a removable silver studded ring around the neck. The whole thing looks okay, but not as classy as the design of the J-Lo or Aguilera perfumes. (Incidentally, on illustrations it looks like the perfume itself is a bright pink, but it is actually just clear and doesn't look as interesting!)
I suspect the target audience for the Avril Lavigne perfume range is younger than that for the J-Lo and Aguilera ones. My fifteen-year-old daughter was really excited to see I had bought this Avril Lavigne one and excitedly asked if she could try it. She has been using it quite a lot since and I will probably end up giving her it, as I am really not overly impressed with it. I asked her to describe what she thinks the perfume is like and she said it's "like a posh-ish smell if you know what I mean, but not too strong."
The first smell you get of the perfume is very strong and overly sweet like children's brightly-coloured boiled sweets, though it soon calms down. It retains the sweetness with maybe a hint of fruit like blackcurrant. It definitely smells purple anyway. However, as the minutes go on, it smells less and less like anything really. It has less staying power than my other perfumes - and they don't last nearly long enough!
I had to check online to discover what Black Star is supposed to smell like and apparently, it has a top note of green pear and pink hibiscus flower, a middle note of black plum and a base note of dark chocolate. Well, I'd never have got any of those! The sweet bit might be the pink hibiscus flower and I guess the blackcurranty smell will be the black plum, but there's certainly no chocolatey smell - I'd have noticed that!
If you do fancy trying this one (and I wouldn't really recommend you bother), shop around as you can get some good deals and extra bits. For example, The Perfume Shop have an offer on their website where you get 30ml of the Black Star perfume with 50ml of the matching body lotion and a black purse or bag with silver studded squares on it (like the packaging of the perfume box) in a box set for just £10. (The RRP is £20.) I know my daughter would love that for a Christmas present and it's good value if you actually like the perfume and can get a couple of nice other bits thrown in too.
Overall though, I found this incredibly disappointing. I'm in my early forties and it is so hard to find a fragrance that suits me. I like light, fruity smells and hate "old women's" flowery perfumes. I also have a budget of around £22 on fragrances, which tends to narrow it down to these kinds of celebrity fragrances. Yet none of the ones I have tried so far last more than two or three hours before you need to re-apply them. Avril Lavigne's Black Star fades away to almost nothing after about half an hour. So although the smell itself is quite pretty, it's pointless wearing it unless you want to carry it round with you and spray yourself several times an evening.
In summary, here are my ratings and comments...
Packaging - Feminine, bright, pretty - 8 out of 10
Bottle - Okay, nothing special - 6 out of 10
Fragrance - Sweet, fruity, pretty - 7 out of 10
Longevity of smell - Minimal, maybe half an hour - 2 out of 10
Recommended for young teenage girls.
I'm not normally a fan of celebrity perfume but I'm prepared to give most a try. I recently had a sample of Avril Lavigne Black Star, her first perfume. I really know nothing about the singer other than her name.
My perfume is a little sample bottle which I got as a freebie in a local department store but the full size bottle comes in a silver and pink shiny box. The bottle is a quirky slightly lop sided star shaped glass bottle with a black faceted diamond shaped lid, around the neck of the bottle is what looks like a silver studded dog collar but in fact its actually a ring which you could wear. The bottle strikes me as a younger persons style, especially with the studded ring, and is designed to be different rather than classy and stylish. It has a "punk" element to it.
Black Star is advertised as edgy, sophisticated, deliciously distinctive, and encourages all girls to "embrace their uniqueness and be their own stars". The notes in Black Star are as follows:-
Top Notes--- Blackcurrant, Mango and Green Pear.
Middle Notes Pink Hibiscus, Lotus and Jasmine.
Base Notes---Mexican Chocolate, Vanilla, Sandalwood and Musk.
After reading the notes I was expecting the perfume to be floral/fruity mix and to be honest it sounded quite nice.
I sprayed Black Star before heading out to work and immediately was struck with a floral fragrance with a sharp fruity element in the background. With blackcurrant, mango and green pear being the top notes I was expecting more of a sharp fresh smell but any fruitiness is definitely background scent.
I hadn't been at work long and I could smell the perfume had changed. The jasmine was very much dominant. It gave the fragrance a strong, heady floral smell, I was starting to like Black Star much to my surprise.
By lunch time my lovely jasmine smell had faded considerably. I was left with a very faint sweet fragrance of vanilla and to smell this I had to put my wrist right to my nose and take a good hard sniff. I'm assuming the sweetness was from the Mexican chocolate although it wasn't really identifiable. The vanilla was the dominant fragrance.
Overall my opinion of Black Star is mixed. On one hand I liked it, I love floral smells particularly jasmine and this was a dominant element to this perfume, but on the other hand it just doesn't last. As I said I applied it just before I went to work and by lunchtime it had all but gone. It was barely noticeable which is a shame. As for being distinctive and embracing uniqueness, well, it just doesn't! There was nothing unique about this at all not even the bottle which is very similar to a Thierry Mugler one.
My local Boots sell Black Star Eau De Parfum for £28,50 for 50ml's and £20.50 for 30ml's. This in my opinion is too expensive for what you get. Its also available in various gift sets too.
This fragrance would suit most ages but in my opinion, its marketed at younger girls with its punky, rock chic design and studded ring I would imagine teenage girls would love this. Black Star would be suitable for daytime or evenings out. I certainly wont be buying a full size bottle of Black Star, it just doesn't have the staying power which is a shame as it smells nice.
I bought this perfume because I'm a fan of Avril Lavigne and this was her first release. I was really excited to try this, as I had heard a lot of positives about it. This has been designed to reflect on Avril's Individuality.
The perfume comes in hot pink, silver and black square box. Inside the bottle is see through and a sort of off star shape, the lid is black and is also in the shape of a star. Below the lid is a studded silver collar which is detachable. The perfume itself is a gorgeous light pink colour.
I really like this perfume and as I have rather a big collection of perfumes, I tend to switch between them depending on my mood. I found this to be an absolutely gorgeous sent, very fruity and fresh. I also found that the smell went through stages from smelling fruity to smell a little bit chocolatey, which I believe to be is quite unique which does represent Avril very well. I would say that the bottle was definitely the thing that attracted my attention the most, as its absolutely amazing and really does stand out in my collection. I usually wear this when I'm in a happy bubbly sort of mood, as I think what I think the scent represents. Its a lovely perfume and I am glad I purchased this.
The major downside for me would have to be that it doesn't stay on your clothing or skin for very long, the scent tends to fade only after about half an hour, which is extremely disappointing as I like to smell good throughout the day. It also means I have to spend quite of time re-applying, which I'm not very fond of and end up forgetting because of how busy I can get. Also compared to the lasting wear that my other perfumes give me, this is a definite turn off for me and does lead me not to use it again unless it was really cheap or was given to me as a gift.
I decided to buy the smallest bottle from boots due to the fact, I didn't want to buy a larger bottle and decided I wasn't much of a fan after all. The bottles are available in three sizes from boots: 15ml £9.33, 30ml £20 and 50ml £27. I think the price is fairly reasonable, I do own more expensive perfumes. But due to the fact the scent doesn't last very long, which leads to using more of the perfume.. I would say that the price is not worth the quality.
Overall a lovely perfume, which smells gorgeous and comes in an extremely amazing bottle. Just a shame that the lasting power isn't very high. I would recommend to try this before you buy, as other peoples opinions may be different, but once I have finished the bottle I have at the moment, I doubt I will be re-purchasing.
It was the quirky little bottle that attracted me to this Avril Lavigne Black Star perfume with its punky princess appearance, it just looked like something different. But can Avril really do perfume? Yes the bottle is nice but the perfume is nothing to write home about. It is very weak and not long lasting at all. I could barely smell it on me once i had it on, it's sweet and girly smelling which surprised me because i thought being an Avril Lavigne perfume and being called 'Black Star' it would be more dark and almost gothic smelling. I expected something unique and different but actually got bland and boring.
Avril fans will probably love it because of the nice look it has about it, but if you're not concerned with appearances of perfumes and are looking to buy a perfume that smells gorgeous then this one isn't the one for you, it's nothing special. It is quite affordable at about £20 a bottle and you can get the gift sets so if you know any Avril Lavigne fans then this could make a nice gift.
I probably have a huge problem for just buying products if they catch my eye and this is a product which highlights this and the ey catching bottledoesn't in anyway back up the perfume. The free "ring" on the bottle doesn't make me feel any better either. The perfume has a nice different scent from most perfumes on the market however unless you just want to keep it for show I wouldn't reccomend anyone buying it. After the first ten minutes of wearing the perfume you would be wondering if you are actually wearing any and be wanting to put some more on. The perfume is definetly not an ideal buy for anyone.
I did say expect quite a few perfume based reviews from me over the next few days and I do intend to live up to my word and slowly but surely work my way through my ever growing perfume collection. Now when it comes to 'celeb' fragrances I was never that big a fan until I started trying a few and was pleasantly surprised by quite a few of them so I decided to try even more starting with this 'Avril Lavigne - Black Star' which I believe was her first perfume attempt. I used to love Avril's music when I was a bit younger but I was unsure whether I would be so thrilled with her fragrance as I must admit I assumed it would be one of those girly, tween fragrances but I have to say Ive been quite shocked - Im not going to pretend this is my favourite ever fragrance - celeb or not - but its been very nice all the same.
Price: 100ml bottle - £25
Stockists: Boots, Superdrug & Amazon.
Other Info: Also available in sizes 30ml + 50ml. This perfume can be picked up quite cheaply from most good perfumes shops - hunt around for a good bargain I reckon.
Im slightly undecided on the bottle for this as while I do like it, I have to admit its not the best design ever. I personally expected something with a bit more of a dark, rock chick edge from Avril but this bottle didnt really reflect her personality for me - its more about pleasing people rather than being herself I reckon - I know she wouldnt have designed it but surely she had some input. Anyway the bottle is made from jagged pink coloured glass which is actually pretty feminine. Around the bottle top is a studded ring which can be removed and worn as jewellery if you like that sort of thing - I personally have never taken it off as thats the best thing about the bottle for me but its a nice little touch. Not an amazing design - could have been better - but its okay.
As I always say when Im writing perfume reviews when it comes to describing the individual notes in a scent Im absolutely terrible so I did some digging around and found the main notes in this fragrance are: Mango, Plum, Bitter Dark Chocolate, Pear & Pink Hibiscous Flower. So from that one would assume that this is going to be a mainly fruity, sweet scent with a bitter edge but really its not like that at all and it actually surprised me by how floral it was.
Not going to lie - the fruity scents of the mango & plum are the strongest straight away and throughout the stages of the perfume - even when it dies down slightly those two scents are still clearly smellable, is that a word? Im not moaning as I LOVE fruity perfumes and as mango is one of my favourite fruity smells I loved this perfume straight away but I think you'll be happy to know this isnt just another fruity & sickly offering. I was surprised that the perfume does turn more floral as it dies down with just a hint of that bitter chocolate scent - which is just fine by me! As it dies down it turns into a much more pleasant scent as it might be a little too fruity for some in the beginning but the mixture of all the scents makes this a perfect perfume for wearing anytime of the day or year - in my opinion anyway.
This tends to last on my skin for around 4-5 hours which Ive found to be about average for most perfumes Ive used. The staying power is pretty good for this one I reckon.
I would recommend this fragrance to...this is a tough one as I think if you like the smell any age would suit this as its not so young only teens will like it and not so grown up that only older women will enjoy it. If you like the smell - and do try before you buy! - I would recommend this to women of all ages.
While this isnt the nicest smelling perfume or best designed bottle I own by a long mile I would recommend this scent to women of all ages for wearing any time of day or year because it is a very versatile fragrance. Im not 100% sure Ill be renewing my bottle when it runs out but Im certainly considering it.
Thanks For Reading.

Avril Lavigne is a singer from Canada. She broke through in 2002 with the song Complicated and was soon a teenage idol to many girls. She scored more hits like Sk8ter Boi. Avril Lavigne stands out with her some alternative clothing. The first two years she was very popular, but then it slowly stopped. In 2007, however she came back with a new album and she has continued to be very popular among the young. In November 2009 her new album, has the name of her fragrance:, Black star.
The perfume bottle is a bit like a star. Two ends of the star are slightly larger than the rest and one is a bit higher than others. The bottle is completely transparent and there is a light pink liquid. On the bottle is a black cap in the shape of a star, below a spike-type bracelet.. If you turn the cap of the bottle you can get off the spike bracelet. So you can choose whether you want the spikes on the bottle or not.. Under the cap is the spray and it works exactly like any other perfumes you press the top of and the perfume comes out by itself. I think the bottle look nice and stands very nice in your bathroom.
The perfume has a composition of flavors such as pink hibiscus, deep dark chocolate and ripe plums. Furthermore there are ingredients such as alcohol, water, benzyl benzoate and citric acid. The smell of the perfume is quite sweet but not too sweet. It has a floral scent and smells fresh as well. The smell last long and would say a good five hours. You do not need much. I don't smell it my self at the end of the day any more, but that is with many perfumes. I can not say that the smell is especially true for young girls (though I myself am quite young), I rather think that the smell is appropriate for all ages.
This perfume has quite surprised me. The scent fits with what I like. I did enjoy the fragrance. He smells nice and the bottle looks great. My own standard is much more expensive perfume and this perfume is quite cheap. The perfume comes at a price of 25 pounds for 100ml. I don't really see any negatives with this fragrance and will also highly recommend him.
I'm a sucker for things in bright stylish packaging, so was delighted to recieve a bottle of Avril Lavignes Black Star perfume as a gift for my birthday back in July.
Celebrity perfumes seem to be all the rage at the moment, with many celebritys having their own perfumes that they endorse . I'm not sure how much creative impact they actually have on the scents or bottle design, but I do feel like the jagged star shape of this bottle, combined with the hot pink colour of the perfume and the chunky black lid with it's studded ring fits with Avril Lavignes own style very well. The studded ring part of the bottle can actually be removed and worn, although not by me, since I have fat fingers!
I didn't like to ask how much was paid for this with it being a gift , but a quick google search shows that it's not particularly expensive , with a 30ml bottle costing around £20. There are also body lotions and shower gels in this scent range . I feel the price is rather reasonable for perfume, and puts this at the more affordable end of the market.
Spraying a little onto my wrists and nexk, there is a fruity top note, which is described on the packaging as green pear .I would say it is perhaps slightly artificial, more pear drops than actual pear, but luckily this particular element of the scent quickly fades, to be replaced with The fruity/floral combination of black plum and pink hibiscus. This was a subtle yet deep scent, with a hint of spice behind it that I couldn't quite put my finger on . Over time, the scent of dark chocolate came through - not at all sweet, but rather like the smell of a good quality, high cocoa content chocolate, and this mingled with the plum deliciously.
I found that despite the scent being quite deep, it didn't last particularly long on my skin, perhaps a couple of hours before fading into something bland and unworthy of comment . I do feel that this perfume is perhaps aimed at a younger teenage market, with it's colourful and fresh bottle design and it's lively fruity scent, and although I liked the smell, I don't think it particularly suited me, and would perhaps not buy it again.
3 stars - a sweet fruity floral, with a tantalising hint of bitter dark chocolate.
I have been really impressed with this debut fragrance from Avril Lavigne. To be honest i could not stand here singing but she seems to have striked a winner with a fragrance career perhaps.
What i particularly like about it, is that once you have sprayed it on, it has a very distinct smell. Many perfumes these days simply combine into one smell and you cannot tell the difference. This one you can.
It is very feminine which i also like. The bottle is very attractive although not that unique. I also own Thierry Mugler Angel, which has practically the same bottle. What Lavigne has done though is made it her own. She has added a band around the top of the bottle which you can wear as a ring.
My overall opinion of this fragrance is that it is very feminine, juicy and typically defines Lavignes strong personality which took the music world by storm, and i am sure she will make it in the fragrance department.
Black Star is the first fragrance by Avril Lavigne. I was excited to see this come out and to try it, however was disappointed by the perfume itself.
The perfume comes in a pretty box which is sort of rock like. It feels like little square studs which are silver in colour. The tag line for the perfume was that it is made for " the girl who loves to stand out and express her own style".
The perfume comes in a pretty shaped bottle, which is pointy and has a spiked dog collar around the neck which is plastic. The lid is black and is diamond shaped. The perfume itself is pink and girly looking. The first impression is that Avril Lavigne is trying to mix the girly girls anc the rock chicks together.
The perfume is scented with black plum, Pink Hibiscus Flower and dark chocolate. When I sprayed this scent, I was really disappointed with how weak it was. It barely scented by skin and I could just about smell the plum in it. I have the feeling it should be sweet and juicy but it just doesn't last long enough. It barely lasted an hour on me and that was after spraying a fair bit.
Although the presentation of this perfume is very nice, the actual scent and the amount of time it lasts is very disappointing. I wouldn't buy it again nor would I recommend it.
Black Star is the first fragrance release from pop star Avril Lavigne, it's being promoted as "a deliciously distinctive fragrance that embodies Avril's individuality." Lavigne herself comments, "It's all about being edgy and feminine in a fun way," it combines notes of pear, hibiscus flower, dark chocolate and black plum.
Black Star's first hints are of pear followed by the other fruity notes, heart notes being of black plum with the top note of pink hibiscus flower. It's a really sweet floral smell, with bass notes of dark chocolate not an intense amount but subtle enough to add depth to the fragrance. With it being dark chocolate you'd think it would be very heavy and overpowering yet the mix isn't instead the harmony of chocolate and floral notes of the fruit give a light lift to the perfume. It's a sweet smelling aroma fitting for a younger female audience.
It comes in a pink and black, star-shaped bottle and it includes a studded metallic band that can be worn as a ring or as a charm on a necklace.
Black Star is the first fragrance that the Canadian singer Avril Lavigne has released and became available in the UK from September 2009. Shortly after it becoming available here I purchased a gift set from Boots costing £20 although as of now it seems this set is no longer available from Boots.
The Avril Lavigne gift set came in a black box with a nice clear image of the contents inside. which included: a 30ml bottle of the fragrance Black Star, a 50ml tube of Black Star body lotion and an evening bag.
When opening the gift set I immediately picked up the fragrance and the design of the bottle is very funky. The bottle is star shaped, with a studded ring around the rim, which is removable however I've left mine on as I like the character it adds to the bottle. The colour of the fragrance is pink and the cap on the bottle is black. I feel the design of the bottle represents Avril Lavigne perfectly. The design however is definitely directed towards teenagers and young adults and being a young adult myself I guess this is why I like it.
Before purchasing this fragrance I had done a little research to find out what would be in it as I was very curious as to what kind of scent it will be. I remember reading that it will include hibiscus flower and dark chocolate, so I thought it would be a very sweet floral smell. When I sprayed the fragrance for the first time I was delighted with the scent, it was sweet but not too sweet, with a flowery smell - I'm probably not the best at describing scents but I was expecting something a lot sweeter smelling. I find the perfume lasts a good while, after a few hours I can tell I still have it on but may need freshening up.
The body lotion comes in a pink tube with a black cap and a few stars decorating the tube. Its a cute design and fits the Black Star range really well. The body lotion glides on very nicely and smells just like the fragrance, it is lovely. A little bit goes a long way! The evening bag is definitely for teens, its black on one side with a sheet on these silver studs attached on the other side. Its not something I'd personally use but I think its something a teenager would like to have.
Currently on Boots.com they have 3 different sizes of Black Star available, they are:
15ml bottle of Black Star costing £14
30ml bottle of Black Star costing £20
50ml bottle of Black Star costing £27
I do know that this fragrance is also available in 100ml elsewhere.
To sum up, I think that it is definitely worth the money, the fragrance alone is beautiful and is definitely something I will keep using. I would recommended smelling the fragrance before purchasing it as its not going to suit everyone's required taste.
I recently bought a 100ml bottle of this perfume and I have used so much of it, because it is such a lovely fragrance. To be honest, when I heard of Avril Lavigne having a perfume, I thought that it wasn't going to be nice. And I don't know why I thought this, because I do think she is a brilliant singer. But I am very glad that I did decided to try this perfume and now it is one that I wear quite frequently.
Black Star is a fruity, sweet scent and this is the first thing you will notice when you spray it. But having said that there is something about this perfume that gives it a strong scent.
Because this perfume is fruity and strong at the same time, I think it can be worn during the day and also at night. But the only problem with this perfume, is that it doesn't last as long as some other perfumes. It does last a reasonable amount of time, but about after 30 minutes the fragrance does begin to fade. And this is a shame really, as it is such a gorgeous scent!
The bottle of Black Star, I think is so creative and just as lovely as the perfume is holds. The bottle is in a star shape, which when you look at it from above (looking down on top of the lid) it looks brilliant.
The bottle of Black star is see-through and the perfume inside it is tinted a pink/purple colour. I would be tempted to say that the bottle looks quite girly, but then there is something more unique about it. I personally think anyone would have a very hard job finding a fault with this bottle, because it is so nice.
I honestly can't remember where exactly I bought this perfume, mainly because I do buy a lot of perfumes for myself and friends in many different shops.
But on the Perfume Shop website you can buy the 30ml bottle for £10.99 and the 50ml for £14.99. I would recommend going and checking out the prices of this perfume in other shops, s you may find it cheaper in some health and beauty shops.
I love this perfume and would defiantly recommend it to anyone. I can't say how lovely this perfume is, you really have to try it. When my 100ml bottle runs out, I will defiantly be hitting the shops to get another one.
The only down fall of this perfume is that it doesn't last that long, so you really do need to re-spray this perfume. But the positives really do outweigh the negatives with this perfume!
