Boss Nuit Femme Eau de Parfum
Advantages: Lovely, light and fresh fruity-floral scent which is very easy to wear. Nice bottle (bar the lid).
Disadvantages: Marketed completely wrong. Very poor longevity.
I've been experimenting a lot with different fragrances just recently. I've stuck to the 'safe options' for quite a long time now, knowing what I like and just replacing a bottle whenever it empties has become rather boring though. Just before Christmas I remember spraying a little of this Boss Nuit whilst looking for a gift for my sister, I found I quite liked it myself but didn't have the money to be spending on myself at that time of year. When I found a gift set for a rather good price in The Perfume Shop a few weeks back I remembered my initial positive thoughts about the scent and decided to get myself one.
Boss Nuit is available in 30ml, 50ml and 75ml bottles from the usual places (Boots, Debenhams, The Perfume Shop etc). A 30ml bottle will cost around £34, a 50ml around £45 and a 75ml bottle around £59. I found a gift set containing a 30ml bottle of the perfume and a 50ml bottle of the body lotion in The Perfume Shop in the sale for £25, obviously a very good price looking at the price of the bottles alone.
The bottle is simple yet appealing to the eye. The perfume is held in a rectangular, long black bodied bottle. The height of the bottle depending on the volume of perfume contained, my 30ml bottle is roughly 7inches tall so very easy to just pop in my bag and top up if required. Along the top of this black bottle is a golden strip with 'Hugo Boss' engraved at the front and the bottle creates a simplistic yet elegant design which I'm very much of a fan of. Unfortunately the lid lets it down. This is just a transparent plastic top with jagged cuts at the top. The lid is far too tall being about two thirds of the height of my 30ml bottle and, whilst I get the feeling it's supposed to resemble crystal, it just looks cheap. Nevertheless, the lid still does what it's supposed to and I've never had it come off in my bag and allow any leakages so I'll give it credit where it's due.
The perfume is dispensed via the usual spray nozzle which is also gold in colour matching the band across the top of the bottle. One spray gives a plentiful quick burst of fragrance and this too is very functional and practical, no problems there.
Boss Nuit has top notes of peach and aldehydes, heart notes of white flowers, jasmine and sensual violet and base notes of crystalline moss and creamy sandalwood.
Upon immediate skin contact the peach scent is not only the dominant scent, but the only scent I can detect. It's quite a crisp scent with a soft, elegant fruity peach smell which I personally find very appealing and just generally very nice. This does 'settle' rather quickly though and after about ten minutes the sandalwood becomes very detectable. I really love the smell of sandalwood and I think the slight musky scent from this combined with the remaining peach give quite a pleasant woody scent which I do think is something quite special as I very rarely find woody scents appealing so Boss Nuit must be doing something right there.
A mere ten minutes later we get another scent change though. Here is where I feel the floral scents come through and I think this does leave a more floral-fruity scent than woody one once it's fully developed. I must admit I did find this surprising after looking up the notes of this perfume and I do think the heart and base notes are a little muddled. Nevertheless, it makes for a lovely, light and fresh fragrance.
Now Hugo Boss state this perfume was inspired by 'the eternal elegance of the little black dress', a timeless classic outfit needs a timeless classic perfume which is where Boss Nuit is supposed to come in. This coupled with the name 'Nuit' led me to expect something quite dark, strong and suitable for nights out. Actually we get the complete opposite as I find this to be a very light, subtle fragrance which I could only describe as an everyday sort of scent. It's a perfume I wear for work rather than out for a nice meal or a special occasion etc. Whilst I do feel this has been marketed completely wrong, I still very much enjoy the scent.
The next downside is the longevity of the perfume. I do very much like its subtle and delicate scent but I don't appreciate how weak it is quite so much. This, unfortunately, is one of those perfumes you find yourself topping up every hour. The note changes are gone through very quickly and you've got the final settled fragrance within a maximum of half an hour, another thirty minutes and the scent is barely noticeable at all. This is extremely disappointing as I really, really like the scent of this perfume. If my bottle didn't claim this was a EDP I would very much assume it was a EDT and even then I would think it was a weak one.
I can forgive the other faults of Boss Nuit just because I love the scent so much but its very poor longevity is just too much to forget about. I will be continuing to use my current bottle and will be fairly happy in doing so although I shalt be replacing it. I really wish Hugo Boss would sort out its weakness as I could imagine this becoming a firm favourite daywear scent if it lasted longer. Unfortunately, it doesn't and I find that extremely disappointing and annoying.
Summary: A beautiful scent which very annoyingly just does not last.
