Brut Brut Aftershave
Advantages: Well priced last a long time
Disadvantages: No citrus notes smells strongly of alcohol in the bottle
In some recent household economy measures my husband has decided to supplement his mixture of aftershaves with a cheaper fragrance and has gone all Retro on me with wearing Brut Aftershave. I have to admit I had a lot of preconceptions about this as to me it just reminded me of the 70's and 80's and my dad wearing this and Old Spice depending on what we won at Christmas at the church fairs.
The bottle comes packaged in a cardboard box and a clear bottle that is has concave sides this my husband assures me means that it is easy to hold when he is tipping it up. The lid is green plastic and seems to be fairly robust with a screw top that stays in place when it goes in to a wash bag and carried. Unlike some other brands my husband has this bottle has no atomiser spray it is just an open top which he can splash into his hands then on to his face.
The aftershave itself is a transparent green colour that does I think look slightly alarming like a chemical from a children's chemistry kit. However it doesn't cause my husband to go green like Kermit.
I personally when I smell this from the bottle find it not that nice as it smells very strongly of alcohol. However when it is placed on to the skin this harshness actually seems to disappear leaving a woody lavender scent instead. It is marketed as having citrus top notes with hints of spicy wood. My husband and I have yet to smell any citrus notes in this aftershave either from the bottle or when he is wearing it. I have asked him for the review to let me know if he smells it when he first puts it on near his face and he hasn't been able to do so. Which given this is supposed to be a top note is a bit disappointing. The lavender is strongest at this point for both of us when he wears it. The lavender doesn't smell like French lavender to me instead it does remind me of when I am gardening and cutting the woody stems of the lavender bush back and it is much earthier than a lot of lavender scents. This is also balanced out I think with the hint of ylang-ylang and the richer notes and green tones of this seem to give it a more masculine edge.
After been on for around 10 minutes there is a deep woody pine smell which he likes. It isn't too pine based so that he smell like toilet cleaner but it more of a pine cone scent that we notice on walks in the country. The other lasting scents we both notice are sandalwood and a mossy scent these actually last surprising well given the price and are certainly noticeable for a few hours after application.
One of the reasons my husband likes this as an aftershave is that as well as sealing his pores after a shave he feels it actually has a bit of moisturising qualities to it as well. Now this is just his perception and I do know he uses a moisturiser as well afterwards most of the time but he seems to think it does this better than his more expensive Ralph Lauren aftershave.
Overall at Around £6 for a 100ml bottle it is great value for money. It is not an unpleasant scent but it is definitely masculine in its notes and certainly not one I could wear as a woman unlike some more unisex scents marketed now. The scent has heavy woody tones that last well throughout the day. Whilst I still think it is not as sophisticated a scent as some of his more expensive scents it is a very good everyday scent for work and one that isn't just for old men as my husband at 37 smells good with it on and it doesn't conjure up images of old men and pipes to me.
Summary: A great value scent that last well during the day
