Advantages: A classic, confident scent in a beautifully minimal bottle

Disadvantages: Expensive and almost cliche in its classic nature.

In the world of women's scents there are good perfumes, there are great perfumes and then, standing above them all, there is Chanel No 5. It easily overpowers all pretenders to the title of the world's favourite perfume; a bottle is sold every 30 seconds. Despite its immense popularity however it remains a classic scent, the perfect combination of seduction and class. It comes in a simple well designed bottle, almost identical to the one originally designed by Chanel herself. The clear glass allows you to see the perfume inside while the minimal, unfussy design makes it stand out from the many pretentious and over the top bottles of modern day perfumes. If you wish for a technical dissection of bass notes and the influence of jasmine and sandalwood then you should turn your attention to a different review, what I can say is that the perfume has an artificial floral scent that's strong and long-lasting without quite being overpowering. For many women I think it's an evening scent though I must admit I feel there are probably quite a few career women who douse themselves in it before heading off to do battle; it's that kind of perfume. Chanel originally created it to represent the new independent women appearing during the 20s, its artificial scent was supposed to set off a woman's natural beauty. Almost a hundred years after it first appeared, I know no woman who doesn't feel sexier, more confident when they put it on. It is admittedly, however, a very expensive perfume and you're paying for the history and the brand as much for the scent. It is also arguably not very unique. It's the little black dress of the perfume world; most women will own a bottle of some sort. It's a scent for the classics rather than the trendsetters. Still if there could only be one; it would have to be Chanel No 5.

Summary: The perfect perfume.
