~ INTRODUCTION ~
Casmir came to me in a vial I received in a swap from a fellow member of an online perfume community, Fragrantica. Made by Chopard, a watchmaker, jewellery and accessories company based in Geneva, Switzerland and founded in 1860, Casmir is the first perfume ever launched by the house in 1992.
~ THE PACKAGING ~
Casmir is housed in a deep red carton with golden letters quite oriental in feel. The bottle itself also carries the oriental theme with a flattened round shape and its 'onion' shaped cap. The colour of the perfume itself is a golden yellow. I cannot talk about the use of the bottle as I only own a decant, however its design is certainly unusual and looks impressive on display.
~ THE FRAGRANCE ~
Top notes: peach, apricot, raspberry, blackcurrant
Casmir opens up with a very characteristic, fruity feel that sometimes smells of strawberry and / or apricot to my nose and at other moments intertwined with a smoky, rubbery feel which I recognise as being oppoponax or myrrh as it's otherwise known. A note I often use myself to give volatile, fruity appearances more substance in perfumes. This note isn't at all distracting and can only be felt if you sniff close enough to your skin.
Heart notes: mandarin orange, carnation, cinnamon
In just about 5 - 10 minutes later, the vanilla note starts to develop, a perfumey vanilla that anchors the fruity top notes giving them even more depth and lasting power. The composition is sweet but not overly so due to the well-balanced combination of sweet and sharp-dry notes that develop side-by-side.
Some time later a delightful vanilla and spice mixture hits my nose, still with a light hint of fruit which are now softer and spicier. The heart is well-projected but isn't overpowering, the phase I like the most and one which lasts for about 5 hours.
Base notes: vanilla, benzoin, oppoponax, tonka bean
The smoky, rubbery feel has gone or has been masked with the vanilla that's much more than just a sugary vanilla scent. The drydown reminds me of Organza Indecence having the same cinnamon-vanilla aroma with a touch of wood and cut hay-like feel (tonka bean) characteristic of oriental fragrances. What's more dominant now is the presence of dry, slightly spicy and woody elements that give the vanilla a complex, sexy and grown-up feel.
~ CONCLUSION ~
When first applied, Casmir goes on strong an almost sharp but it dries down considerably fast, even in win-ter. Its average staying power is about 7 hours which is just about OK for an eau de parfum. The composition however is something to write home about, a real treat and so much more than just a sugary vanilla scent. It never feels empty, it's very French in a way, almost dense and cloudy with a good projection (almost too much I'd say, that's why it doesn't stay on the skin longer).
To sum up, Casmir is a rounded, full-bodied and grown up vanilla scent enriched by hints of opulent fruits and spicy woods. I recommend it if you like medium heavy fruity, woody and vanilla-based compositions that aren't two sweet or watery and have a sophisticated, grown-up side.
~ PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ~
Due to its launch in 1992, it's been now retired from department store or drugstore chains throughout the UK. It's still available online, either on Ebay or perfume discounters such as amazon.co.uk or fragrancedirect. Prices vary between £22 - £37 for a 30ml - 100ml Eau de Parfum Spray. Casmir also pops up quite regularly at airport duty free shops, heavily discounted.
Thanks for reading.
