Dior Fahrenheit Eau de Toilette
Advantages: Unique and strong and long lasting
Disadvantages: None for me but some people really don't like it
~~~~~~~~~~ Fahrenheit ~~~~~~~~~~
Fahrenheit comes from the French design house of Dior and is available in a few different incarnations these days with lighter versions and more intense versions but for me although these versions are nice they can't compete with the scent and the complexity of the original.
You can buy the original Fahrenheit in either a spray on Eau de Toilette or an aftershave splash but for me I much prefer the simplicity of the spray bottle as I can just pick it up and spray it either on my skin or clothes. I also think that the spray is much less wasteful than a splash as when I have used splashes I have tended to pour too much in my hands and lost a lot through my fingers.
Fahrenheit was designed by the perfumers Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Maurice Roger and has been in production since 1988 and was immediately a best seller and remains one of Dior's biggest men's fragrance to this day.
~~~~~~~~~~ Notes ~~~~~~~~~~
***** Top Notes *****Hawthorn ( a strange one this as apparently in the middle ages it was referred to as smelling just like deaths from the great plague) Personally I think this is where a lot of the sweetness of Fahrenheit comes from. ***** Honeysuckle ***** Again a really sweet smelling British flower that always reminds me of summer when it grows in abundance in the countryside.
***** Middle Notes ***** The middle notes of Fahrenheit are Sandalwood which is one of my favourite ingredients in men's aftershaves. It is both woody and spicy and very warming and is a staple of a lot of men's fragrances and Patchouli. Patchouli is an earthy smell with a slight sweetness to it. It seems to be one of those smells that people either love or detest.
***** Base Notes ***** The base notes are even more unusual than the top notes as I had no idea what they were and had to look them up. Lentiscus is a Mediterranean shrub where the fragrance is taken from the resin of the shrub. Apparently is smells similar to pine or cedar. Styrax Benzoin is the last basenote and is apparently a tree that is native only to Sumatra.
~~~~~~~~~~ My thoughts on the fragrance ~~~~~~~~~~
Well as I mentioned earlier I love Fahrenheit and have worn it on and off for many years now. Even though it has been in production for so many years it is still unique and there is nothing out there that smells quite like it. This is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on where you stand about the fragrance but at least it is distinctive and anyone in close proximity to you will immediately know that you are wearing Fahrenheit.
Fahrenheit has a lot of connotations about being an 80's fragrance and being slightly old fashioned but I personally prefer to think of it as being classic. Besides I think it is coming back in to fashion as I know a few people who now wear this exclusively. I think people are getting sick of the same generic smelling men's fragrances and are looking for something that is more unique and distinctive and this definitely fits the bill.
I find describing the this a bit difficult because it is such a complex smelling fragrance. It is both sweet but also very earthy and woody. The patchouli and sandalwood do a good job of taking away from the sweet and floral smell of the other notes and it is really warming and spicy too. It is a VERY masculine fragrance and this definitely isn't the type of fragrance that boyfriends and girlfriends could share as there is no way to disguise this is a fragrance made for men. I do always think it has a slight petrol smell to it too which works surprisingly well in a man's fragrance.
Fahrenheit lends itself perfectly to night time wear as it is such a powerful and potent smell and body heat only helps activate the notes in it. I always think this is one of the sexiest men's fragrances, well as sexy as an aftershave can be and it reminds me of late nights and nightclubs. This is one of those fragrances that can really change my mind set and put me in the mood for a night out. I also think it can be worn at any time of the year. Some fragrances lend themselves to summer or winter wear but although at first smell this seems more suited to winter due to it being so heavy the heat and sun really do change the feel of it and make it seem more exotic.
The only downside to this particular fragrance is just how strong it is though again this depends on the person as to whether or not it is actually a downside. For me personally I actually like the fact it is so strong. Aftershave is expensive and if I buy one I want to be able to smell it on myself as I am not buying it for the benefit of other people. I have absolutely no trouble with smelling this as it is really potent especially as it is only an eau de toilette. A couple of sprays is usually enough for me to be able to smell this for hours. Longevity and projection are excellent and if I squirt some on a scarf for instance I can still smell it days later.
~~~~~~~~~~ Price and availability ~~~~~~~~~~
Fahrenheit has to be one of the most widely available men's fragrances out there as I have yet to not see it in a shop that sells aftershaves. You can pick it up in any department store and it is also available from loads of places online. Expect to pay in the region of £45 for a 50ml bottle of the eau de toilette spay and up to £65 for a 100ml bottle.
~~~~~~~~~~ Conclusion ~~~~~~~~~~
Well as you can probably tell from my review I am a big fan of Fahrenheit and really enjoy wearing it. I can totally see why some people may not be keen on it due to it being so unique and also so strong but for me it is a classic man's fragrance and one that I hope to keep wearing for years to come. I am normally attracted to more clean and fresh scented aftershaves but there is something about this that really attracts me and keeps me coming back again and again. I can finish a bottle and then not buy another one for a year or so and am always amazed that it has taken me so long to buy it again because every I smell it it is love at first sniff again for me.
This would be best appreciated by someone that likes strong and heady aftershaves. It used to have an older demographic but I really think it would suit all ages as I have worn it myself since I was a teenager and am now only in my late 20's and whenever I have worn this I have never failed to garner compliments from both sexes and they always know immediately that it is Fahrenheit that I am wearing. I do think it is on the expensive side but unlike a lot of other aftershaves at least the quality of this warrants the price. There are loads of other fragrances in the same price range that cannot last as long as this or give the same projection. A lot of other more modern fragrances start to smell the same after a while and at least with this one you are buying something unique and distinctive and something which doesn't smell like every other aftershave on the market.
