Calvin Klein CK One Eau de Toilette
Advantages: Smells gorgeous, good staying power for the type of fragrance
When you think of Calvin Klein fragrances most people will immediately say CK One, this has become their iconic fragrance and was the first mainstream unisex fragrance to really be a hit. I first discovered it a couple of years after it was launched and since then have always had a bottle in my perfume collection. For me it's not that it's the nicest fragrance available as it's a bit basic to be called that, but it's a fresh and clean perfume which is particularly nice in the warmer months, although it can easily be worn all year round.
CK One has a delicious fruity fragrance, when you first spray it on it comes across as quite floral but this does tone down into a gorgeous citrus fruit smell very quickly. The fruity fragrance is what makes it suitable for men or women and even the initial flowery burst doesn't make the perfume particularly feminine. The freshness is apparent immediately, thanks to a strong bergamot top note and the overall citrus fragrance allows the very fresh scent to continue throughout the life of the perfume.
As well as being citrus, CK One also has a slightly musky fragrance which I love. It's not musky enough to be considered sexy as then it wouldn't work so well as a unisex fragrance, after all a scent which is sexy on a woman wouldn't be good on a man and vice-versa. After a while I can begin to pick out the middle notes in CK One, this is good news as usually I can describe a perfume but my nose is definitely not sensitive enough for me to pick out individual notes. However, in this perfume I can smell lemons and sweet oranges which both mingle together with the bergamot to create a fragrance which could not be confused with anything other than a citrus perfume.
Underneath this citrus scent there is a definite woody/mossy fragrance, it is this which turns CK One from a beautiful perfume into something that men can wear in my opinion. I must admit, I find the concept of a unisex fragrance to be very odd and even after buying CK One for over ten years I still can't get my head around the fact that Mark and I could (in theory) both use the same bottle of perfume. I personally think this fragrance is more suited to women, with just the woody notes to give it any kind of masculine appeal. It's not a pretty fragrance in the classic sense of the word, but the freshness does give it a slightly feminine smell that I know a lot of men definitely will not appreciate.
On the plus side CK One doesn't surround the wearer with a cloud of perfume, there's a gorgeous zesty grapefruit fragrance which comes in an hour or so into the perfume and personally I think this transforms the perfume and stops it becoming overpowering. It's got decent staying power though and a good spray in the morning will linger well past lunch time, that might not sound too impressive for such a strong brand as CK but this has such a relatively fresh and light fragrance that I really am surprised it lasts that long.
