Clinique Happy Eau de Parfum
by Wee_Jackie_163
"Clinique Happy" is a perfume from the well known "Clinique" brand.
Clinique products are widely available from department stores, and some branches of Boots. You can also purchase directly from the company at www.clinique.co.uk, although I am unsure of postage costs here.
Current prices for the ... Clinique Happy Perfume are: £36.00 for the 50ml bottle, or £51.00 for the 100ml bottle. (Info from www.clinique.co.uk.)
Clinique say: "Clinique Happy. A hint of citrus. A wealth of flowers. A mix of emotions. A chic, modern, multi-layered floral fragrance with sparking Ruby Red Grapefruit, Boysenberry Bush Flower, and Hawaiian Wedding Flower. Fresh, bright, soft and sensual. These exotic notes have never been used before in a fragrance."

I received a gift box of assorted Clinique Happy toiletries at Christmas time. Among the items was a 30ml bottle of the "Perfume Spray", with this review outlining my experiences of using the product.
The packaging for the product is rather simplistic, in keeping with the rest of the items in the Clinique Happy range. I do think it is fair to say that there is something of a crisp, contemporary image to be found from the range overall, and the Clinique Happy Perfume Spray is no exception to this rule, with it looking quite modern and minimalist. True, it is perhaps not the prettiest of perfume bottles to display on your dressing table, but it is far from being cumbersome or ugly.
The signature colour for the Happy range overall is a bright orange shade, and the word 'Happy' appears on the front of the bottle in this colour. The glass bottle is rather flat and slim, making it easy to hold, and subsequently spray the perfume from the bottle. There is a 'chrome' effect cap on top of the bottle that is slim, and slightly oval in its shape. Removing this from the top of the bottle reveals a good quality 'pump' dispenser that enables me to quickly and easily 'spritz' some of the perfume from the bottle. I have never encountered any issues with using the product or dispensing the perfume, even though I suffer with limited mobility and weakness in my hands.

I was looking forward to trying the range of Happy toiletries out, and I do have a bit of a love of Clinique products overall, finding them to be very good quality. From the description I found on the internet, describing the perfume's scent (as detailed above), I had high hopes for the perfume, and was particularly looking forward to experiencing the citrus notes in the Happy fragrance, having a love of citrus-type scents.
I have found that the Clinique Happy perfume really 'changes' as it is being worn, so I'd warn fellow consumers of this, and suggest giving the perfume a fair trial, i.e., actually WEARING it on your skin, before you decide to go ahead and purchase it. The scent that is present from sniffing the bottle, or indeed, present on the skin for the first while after application is not the scent that is present at later points during the day afterwards.
In addition, I do find that the Clinique Happy scent really feels very layered, with different scents coming to the front during the course of the day. That is to say that the initial scent experienced for the first while following application gives way and 'blossoms' into something else entirely, so I do feel the manufacturers' statement/claim about the scent being layered is rather spot-on, as a result.

When it is first applied, I find the main scent I can detect is something very floral, although it is very delicate in its perfume, allowing for a slightly less 'heady' effect than perhaps first anticipated. The floral tones in this initial scent feel very pleasant, but I do find they have a sweet edge that I don't particularly like. At first, this sweetness feels quite delicate, but I soon feel it gaining strength and depth until it feels rather like it is swamping the delicate, floral notes that are already present. This is a bit of a shame, as the floral notes felt quite sweet enough in the initial stages. I find that because the overall scent gains so much 'depth' - and it does so, so early on - that a little really goes a long way with this particular perfume. During the first few trials, I sprayed my wrists and neck quite liberally with the perfume, only to discover it felt quite overwhelming once it had dried on the skin. I'd definitely advise spraying only one spritz from the bottle, two at the most, at first, until you are sure that the strong notes in the perfume are not too strong for your own tastes.
I'd assume that the amount of sweetness in the perfume is present as the manufacturers have attempted to make it feel contemporary and fresh, but alas, for me, it just really feels sickly and rather 'false', with a sort of 'saccharine effect' being present among the delicate floral notes. The florals are not strong enough to ward off or counterbalance the sweetness, so they become easily swamped instead.
On the plus side, I find there is a definite hint of citrus in the Clinique Happy scent which feels very fresh and gives a lovely crispness to the perfume's overall fragrance. Once the spray has dried on my skin, I find that the citrus scent feels very subtle, perhaps too subtle for my own tastes, but I can still detect it, nevertheless. This citrus note feels as though it is contained right at the heart or core of the overall scent, so I am able to detect it, whispering its presence throughout the other notes, even those that are strongly-scented, or more 'robust' in their tones. Again, however, this citrus scent feels rather too swamped by the sweetness that lies elsewhere in the perfume's layers, which is a pity, as I find the citrus note feels rather uplifting, with a definite contemporary 'edge' being evident through this element of the perfume's overall scent. I feel that it is the citrus 'infusion' contained within the overall scent that allows this perfume to feel contemporary, and be marketed as such. Without it, the scent would just feel sickly and too floral, so it's presence is a rather crucial one, I feel.
I find that in terms of longevity, the Clinique Happy scent performs very well, with it lasting for several hours before I feel the need to apply a 'top up' spray. In all honesty, I have only ever felt the need to reapply the Happy perfume once or twice, as it is really so strong in its 'body' that it feels more than ample for my own tastes. There have been a couple of occasions where I've spritzed the perfume lightly in a reapplication, but for the most part, I find that the perfume lingers on my skin with quite enough depth to still be noticeable enough throughout the course of the day or night. This is evidence to me of how strong the perfume is, as I will usually always take my perfume in my handbag when I am going out. This has never felt necessary when the Clinique Happy has been worn. The plus side of this, of course, is that the bottle is lasting very well, as much less perfume is required than with other brands, so the Happy's price tag feels wholly justified, as a result.

In conclusion, I can't say that I am a huge fan of the Clinique Happy Perfume. It feels rather too floral and sickly for my own tastes, with the strong infusion of citrus in the scent really being its only saving grace, as far as I am concerned. This citrus 'layer' in the scent is really the only reason that I can bear to wear it, as it provides a pleasantly refreshing 'crispness' in the scent that I really like. Otherwise, I feel the perfume is too sickly and rather over-bearing, and I can't say that I would buy it again in the future.
Taking everything into account, I do feel that only three stars in the Dooyoo product rating score are appropriate on this occasion. Read the complete review |
