Calvin Klein Contradiction Eau de Parfum
Advantages: bottle, price, staying power, ok scent
Disadvantages: too heavy floral, not enough oriental aroma, not particularly memorable or special
Contradiction is part of the Calvin Klein line up of fragrances and is available in a male and female version. The female version is an eau de parfum and was launched in 1998. Contradiction falls into the 'floral oriental' fragrance family and CK state that this fragrance is for an 'active, urban woman'.
As with other fragrances, Contradicition has been put together using three sets of fragrance notes. The notes develop on the skin in different stages.
*Top notes offer the initial burst of fragrance - rose, lily of the valley, jasmine and peony
*Heart notes form the main body of the fragrance - orchid, eucalyptus, pear blossom and syringa
*Base notes round off the fragrance - tonka bean and sandalwood
Considering this fragrance was released 14 years ago, I find the bottle to be quite modern in design. The gold tinted liquid is presented in a tall, slim glass bottle with a raised base. A slim, silver lid extends quite far down the bottle and only exposes a small amount of liquid at any one time. I find the bottle to be quite attractive but nothing spectacular in terms of design.
~Price and Availability~
At one point in time, Contradiction would have been quite an expensive fragrance to buy. Now though, it can be found online at a reduced price. It is available in 30ml, 50ml and 100ml sized bottles. The 100ml bottle can be found on Amazon for less than £20.00. Other sizes are available at a lower price from online outlets including Fragrance Direct and Cheap Smells. It is a relatively inexpensive fragrance to buy.
I have a number of miniature bottles of perfume in my fragrance collection and these are perfect for throwing in my handbag when I go out somewhere. At the moment, I have quite a few Calvin Klein miniatures. I am fond of a few of the CK fragrances but find them to be of a lesser quality compared to other brands such as Gucci and Dior. The price of this EDP is a fair enough price to pay for a 100ml bottle but I wouldn't pay much more.
Contradiction EDP is quite a concentrated fragrance. I only need to apply a small amount of the tinted liquid to my wrists and neck for just the right strength of fragrance without overpowering myself or those around me. I personally don't use Contradiction all that often as it isn't my favourite fragrance by a long shot. I had hoped for it to be more oriental that it was floral but it is definitely more floral based than anything else.
Once applied, the floral notes take over the top notes and come across as a little heavy and cloying at first. The fragrance soon settles down to reveal a fresher floral blend which is a little more appealing but still heavier than many other floral fragrances on the market. The lily of the valley, rose and jasmine combination is a little too much for me personally and I find it a bit too 'mature' smelling.
The heart of Contradiction is a little more relaxed and is simply a light, slightly musky floral blend. I can't say that I am able to pick out the individual notes here as they are well blended and the scent to me, comes across as being quite generic floral than unique. I feel the fragrance is lacking something which would make it more individual and special to wear. The oriental feel of the fragrance isn't very evident until the base notes in my opinion which is quite disappointing.
As the floral notes start to leave my skin, I much more appealing aroma lingers, albiet quite close to my skin. Although sandalwood is quite a common base note, I still appreciate what it brings to any fragrance. It is presented well with the tonka bean and together, a mild, woody aroma with a delicate touch of sweetness is noticeable on my skin for a few hours. The fragrance is rounded off nicely.
I would say this is a bit heavy for day time wear but not special and deep enough for evening wear. I am more likely to wear it for day time wear. Contradiction, in my opinion, isn't well suited to my younger skin type but may suit others.
Cheap and fairly cheerful but not a fragrance I would go out of my way to buy as it isn't particularly special and the floral notes are just not for me personally. I couldn't see myself wearing this on a day to day basis as it is a little boring. It does last fairly well on my skin and can be detected around 7hours after application.
Thanks for reading :)
