While trying out all of the different fragrances available in John Lewis I fell in love with this fragrance by Creed.
The price tag was not as nice as the scent and it was a while before I ended up buying it. The large 75ml bottle costs a huge £165.00!
The bottle looks quite masculine. It is matte black and is the same shape as the other Creed fragrance bottles, which is a sort of shield shape with the logo embossed into the glass.
Love In Black was released in 2008. It was inspired by former first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy and is composed of ingredients from the places she visited and loved.
I personally find that to be a crazy story and I think it cheapens the brand trying to associate itself so closely with a ‘celebrity’.
The top notes are Italian violet, night-blooming jasmine and cedar from Virginia.
The heart notes are Florentine iris, cloves and Tonkin musk.
The base notes are Bourgogne blackcurrant and Bulgarian rose.
The fragrance is sprayed in sharp bursts. A strong scent of violet is the first thing that hits you. It is sweet and like parma violets sweets, but a bit more intense and it is combined with something heavier, which dulls the bright violet scent a bit and makes the fragrance seem a bit more mature. I think the heavier note is the cedar. These notes combine well. The cedar isn’t too harsh.
As it wears on more floral notes are revealed giving the fragrance a lot more of a sophisticated scent, but it keeps its strong violet scent right to the end.
I really like the scent. I think it does have an expensive feel to it and it seems to have notes that are deeper than some cheaper fragrances. The fragrance has quite a woody scent, which gives it a mature feel. I wouldn’t say the fragrance is too complex. Sometimes when all I can smell is the violet and wood it seems a bit flat, but I do really enjoy this fragrance. It has great projection and I always notice it on myself when I am wearing it.
I have found that it lasts well on my skin and is still present after 10 hours of wear.
I always choose to wear this fragrance during the day. I have never chosen to wear it for a night out or special occasion, which seems silly as it is so expensive. It would definitely be suitable for night time wear and it is one I will consider choosing for nights out in the future.
I would recommend trying this before you buy it and then the decision of whether it is worth so much of your money is up to you.
I am pleased to have this in my collection, but it is a one-off and I don’t expect to be purchasing many (if any) more fragrances that are so expensive.
