D&G Anthology 21 Le Fou
Advantages: Nice understated fragrance, attractive bottle, price.
Disadvantages: Not the most distinctive smelling or the longest lasting
I decided ages ago not to buy any new aftershaves until I had at least made headway with some of the ones that I had. After a few months of actually using the ones that I've got and not buying any new ones I have actually managed to use a few bottles and save myself some money in the meantime.
Last week however I decided to some D&G Le Fou as it was on special offer and was too big a bargain to pass up.
########## Dolce and Gabbana Anthology Collection ##########
The Dolce and Gabbana anthology collection is a set of different scents which are all gender neutral i.e. unisex.
The fragrances are all based on Tarot cards and their numbers. Le Bateleur 1: The juggler, L'imperatrice 3: The Empress, L'Amoureaux 6: The lovers, La Rou de la Fortune 10: The wheel of time, La Lune 18: The Moon.
Dolce and Gabbana recently released two more fragrances for the collection which are La Temperance 14: Temperance and the one which I bought which is Le Fou 21: The fool.
########## Le Fou 21 ##########
According to Dolce and Gabbana Le Fou is a fragrance that is designed for care free and spontaneous individuals hence its name of jesters. The fool stands for provocation and his temperament is unpredictable.
I'm not so sure about all the marketing guff but it does smell nice.
I really like the packaging of all the anthology fragrances. They come in really thick sturdy looking rectangular glass bottles that have black ridged lids and old fashioned looking stickers to the front of them. This makes the bottles look in my opinion anyway subtle and classy. This is one of my favourite bottle designs of any aftershave just because I appreciate its simplicity and elegance compared to some aftershaves that come in ever increasingly elaborate bottles.
########## The smell ##########
Le Fou contains top notes of Bergamot, Coriander and Violet. Heart notes are Congac, Juniper Berry and Cardamon whilst the base notes are made up of Woody Notes, Gingerbread and Tonka Bean.
Combined this all gives Le Fou a light fresh smell that is perfect for daytime and summer wear.
When you first spray Le Fou it is immediately smells a little too strongly of alcohol but this soon settles down and the bergamot becomes instantly noticeable. There is a hint of spiciness to take away from the sweetness of the fragrance and to me it smells very refreshing but it also has a slight warmth to it that compliments the freshness really well. I would say that it is invigorating to wear and one that I would spray on in the morning to help me wake up.
The fragrance isn't the most distinctive one out there but it isn't so generic as to smell like nearly every other unisex fragrance on the market. Talking of it being unisex I personally think it smells much more like a man's fragrance than a woman's and personally I would think that this would be too masculine a smelling scent for most women to wear.
########## Longevity and strength ##########
The longevity of Le Fou isn't too bad but it isn't the greatest either. I can probably get around 4 to 5 hours of smell from spraying it on in the morning before I need to reapply. If I make sure and apply it to my pulse points then I can probably get an extra hour of longevity from it but I usually just spray a little on my clothes and neck before leaving the house.
This would be an ideal fragrance for someone who is wanting to wear a subtle aftershave as it doesn't project all that much. It has a decent strength but this is mainly contained to my immediate area so there is no fear of offending someone else by wearing it.
Also it really does not matter how much you apply it still won't overpower because it really is that subtle and inoffensive.
########## Price and availability ##########
The reason that I bought this instead of something that I liked better was because it was on offer. For £20 I got a 100ml bottle of the fragrance and an accompanying shower gel. They came together boxed in a really nice presentation case. For this price I thought that it was a complete bargain and one that I didn't want to pass up. The usual price of the bottle seems to be around the £40 mark which again seems to be really good value for such a large bottle of designer aftershave. The fragrance is eau de toilette and I don't think that it comes in any other strength.
I bought mine in a department store but Le Fou seems to be a little harder to come by than some of the other fragrances in the anthology collection. I have only seen it a couple of times whereas with the other ones they seem to be ubiquitous and in every single shop that sells fragrances. I'm not sure if this is because this one is less popular than the others or if it is because it was a limited edition but I personally quite like this as it means less people will be wearing it.
########## Recommendation ##########
It depending on what you are looking for in a fragrance if I would recommend or not. I personally really like it but if you are looking for something with lots of punch and pizazz then you should probably buy something else as this is probably going to be too subtle and understated for you. I normally like a really strong aftershave but I actually appreciate that this one isn't so in your face as some of the others that I have bought. It isn't the most distinctive but it is perfectly nice and enjoyable to wear. That might not seem like a ringing endorsement but there are times when all I want is to smell good without being over the top and for me D&G Le Fou 21 perfectly fulfils that criteria.
