A fragrance as soft as a cashmere sweater

I first encountered Cashmere Mist when I visited the US back in 1999 and I was browsing Macy's in San Francisco when one of the more daunting sales assistants in the perfume department sprayed a little my way. I liked what wafted towards me and while I didn't buy a bottle that day, I did a few weeks later on a trip to New York City.

I don't have a vast collection of fragrances and tend to be very loyal when it comes to fragrances - I guess you could say I know what I like. The bottle of Cashmere Mist I bought back in 1999 has long since gone but I picked up a bottle of EDT in Debenhams recently after seeing it on display and remembering the aroma fondly.

      ~~The Bottle~~

The one thing I really don't like about Cashmere Mist is the bottle. The shape looks like a hybrid of the female form and a flower, and the frosted glass lid on the EDT bottle is, I find, rather difficult to manipulate on and off. The EDP bottle is slightly different and has a clear glass lid.

The bottle design strikes me as fussy and if it had cleaner lines it would probably match the beautiful lettering Donna Karan uses on the packaging for Cashmere Mist products better.

The only good thing I can say about the shape of the bottle is the fact it is easy to hold in your hand.

      ~~The Notes~~

The top note of this perfume is apple, with middle notes of jasmine, lily of the valley and suede and base notes of musk, sandalwood, amber, and vanilla.

      ~~My Thoughts~~

When I first used Cashmere Mist I used eau de parfum and if I am honest, I prefer the EDP to the eau de toilette. Unfortunately the EDP is hard to come by on these shores so my latest purchase is EDT.

The top notes on the EDT are strong and run the risk of being a little overpowering. They also have absolutely no bearing on how this perfume is going to play out over the course of a few minutes so if you are unsure of it on first sniff, stick with it as it might surprise you.

I find it takes about 15 minutes or so for the floral heart to come through and when it does the fragrance softens slightly and loses the almost acidic aroma of apple. It is, however, the base which I really love about Cashmere Mist with the combination of amber and vanilla in particular giving it a soft and sensuous aroma.

I've heard some people describe the scent of Cashmere Mist as something similar to baby powder, but I have to disagree - the base may well be delicate and soft but it has a warmth which is lacking from any baby powder I ever used. Furthermore, the warmth lingers for some time - if I apply Cashmere Mist in the morning that soft and warm fragrance will still be lingering come tea time.

When Donna Karan launched Cashmere Mist in 1994 she described it as being inspired by the feel of cashmere on a woman's skin. As someone who wears cashmere a lot during the winter and who loves the soft and warm feeling it gives me I have to say Karan has succeeded in creating a fragrance which matches that sensation quite brilliantly.

The fragrance lingers beautifully on clothing too and I must admit there are times when I like to spray a little on my bed clothes just so I can enjoy the delicate aroma at bedtime.

My only real criticism of the EDT of Cashmere Mist is the harshness of the top notes which isn't as evident if you use the eau de parfum. It's a shame really because the joy of Cashmere Mist is the anticipation of what is to come once it has settled on your skin - or your clothing - and the fact the fragrance is a delicate one which won't overpower anyone and will probably be noticed most by the wearer. I suspect that's why I like it as it's my own senses it seduces.

You can purchase the 30ml EDT spray in Debenhams for £33 with the 50ml bottle coming in at £46. The EDP is harder to find in the UK and is considerably more expensive.
