Advantages: Well-composed, natural, sunny scent
Disadvantages: Thin base, somewhat linear
Group: Floral fruity
I aquired a mini of Soleil EDP with my purchase of Grain de Soleil Eau de Parfum, a sister fragrance to Soleil while taking relatives to nearby Fragonard factory recently in Grasse, France.
THE PERFUME HOUSE
Established in 1926, family-owned perfume factory Fragonard use locally sourced raw materials (where available) and hundreds of years of traditional perfume know-how to make their affordable but niche quality fragrances and corresponding body care line. At the moment, there are about 50 different fragrances in production.
Just like Grain de Soleil, Soleil (which translates to 'Sun') comes in a flattened oval - shaped and textured glass flacon that's meant to represent the haze of sun. The bottle cap is unusual and original representing the sun in a bohemian style. The outer box is golden yellow that evokes a sunny, warm and summery atmosphere.
Top notes: orange blossom, jasmine
Soleil's opening is fresh and orange-y with touches of citrus fruit and flower that's immediately warmed up by the markedly floral presence of jasmine kicking in with a fairly large sillage. The result is a simpler, less powerful and a tad more linear, but similarly sunny and bright J'Adore type start that's fresh, optimistic and radiant. Naturally sweet floral straight from the start, the fresh, fruity and jasmine-laden mixture will last for a good half an hour before the middle notes join in.
Heart notes: wisteria, rose, lily, iris
With time Soleil get increasingly powdery and soft due to the iris as well as the orange blossom which by now is in full swing. At times the jasmine comes forth the strongest, at other times it's a powderiness with nuances of fresher lilac and rose that dominates the heart giving that elevating, sunny and smiling warmth to the composition.
On projection most of the nuances are lost and blend in seamlessly that can have you thinking that Soleil doesn't really evolve on or around me. It does but it happens in subtle ways that aren't always noticeable. To sum up, the heart of Soleil is a well-blended, never cloying or overpowering, powdery iris - tinged velvety jasmine with a fresh and slightly bitter edge that gradually mellows out in the course of 4 - 5 hours.
Base notes: musk, sandalwood, amber
The powdery jasmine still clinging to the edges, I'm starting to pick up lots of clean and soft musk where the musk has an aquatic and almost vegetal aroma to my nose like the stems of the jasmine flower soaked in water. Sadly I cannot distinguish any resinous, spicy or woodsy aspects I associate with amber apart from a clearly present warm and powdery vanilla base that blends in with the clean, warm and aquatic musk. The final accord stays close to the skin in the final 7 - 8 hours which is only average for an eau de parfum.
Flowery fragrances, especially ones loaded with natural materials work best when flowers actually bloom that is in the spring or summertime. As I am writing this, a gentle snow has started falling and indeed Soleil is like a soft duvet covering me: comforting and warming in the cold winter. However, there's something missing that might be the lack of natural source of heat where this fragrance could really bloom or at least last longer and stay richer towards the end.
The blending is well-done and spot-on as expected from a house with such a knowledge on perfume art, the quality of the raw materials leaves nothing to be desired. In summary, My slight grief is that it's not as full and rich on the drydown as I thought it would be. Soleil is a natural-smelling, moderately sweet, happy, but focused, soft and pleasant powdery iris - jasmine scent let down by a thin drydown and a somewhat linear overall development. Recommended for warm weather.
