Gloria Vanderbilt Vanderbilt Eau de Toilette
Advantages: Smells lovely, with a sophisticated edge.
Disadvantages: May be wrongly thought of as old fashioned.
I recently went to a church fete and won a bottle of this Gloria Vanderbilt perfume from a raffle stall. I am somewhat familiar with the brand of perfume as my mum used it during my childhood in the 1980's. However, I have not heard much about it since then. After winning it I seriously was just going to re-donate it to the next raffle as I thought it would just be too old fashioned for me. However, after reading an online review here on Dooyoo praising the perfume I thought I would give it a chance.
I was actually surprised to find out that this perfume is still being sold today. It was one of those classic 1980 brands that I just figured had died out. The perfume was actually launched way back in 1982 and the fact that it is still around now must be testament to it's appeal. It was launched by L'oreal for the American heiress Gloria Vanderbilt.
The perfume I have is a 100ml ( or 3.4 Fl. Oz) sized bottle. This comes boxed and wrapped in cellophane. The packaging design is very memorable and has a classic, age-defying appearance. The box is a very feminine pale pink whilst the name of the perfume is picked out in white font. An elegant swan adorns the box and beneath this a gold etched version of Vanderbilt's signature. The back of the box is printed with full ingredients and warnings. The brand make one statement too: "Reveal your inner beauty".
Inside the bottle of perfume is protected by a cardboard sleeve. The bottle is much larger than I expected it to be. The bottle design is again something I remember from my youth as it is so beautiful. The bottle is flat and penny shaped and etched deeply into the glass is the swan logo. It is an exquisite and graceful design that looks so classy. The top of the bottle is also etched with the Vanderbilt name. The top is easy to remove but also sits securely over the dispensing button once replaced. The dispensing pad is basic in design. Press it once and the perfume is ejected as a fine mist. You need to hold it about four inches away from where you want to apply it.
After sampling the perfume for the first time I was very surprised and pleased to rediscover this perfume as an adult. It actually brings back a lot of memories about how my mother used to wear the scent. However, I can now appreciate and enjoy the fragrance myself. I wouldn't call this 'old fashioned' at all and believe that women of any age might like this, although I do think it's tailored towards certain personality types.
The perfume is described online as a "floral oriental" fragrance. I can definitely appreciate that it conjures up dreams of tranquil oriental gardens. It has a heady, floral power that is almost intoxicating. The character of the fragrance is refined, elegant and it suggests opulence, intelligence and sophistication.
I am not an expert at picking out specific notes of perfume but I can certainly detect smoky sandalwood and sweet spikes of orange. According to experts the 'heart notes' comprise of carnation flowers, tuberose, orris root, jasmine, ylang-ylang and rose" whilst among the top notes are "pineapple, orange blossom, lavender and bergamot". The base notes that ground the fragrance and make it feel warm and mature include "sandalwood, cinnamon, musk and vanilla". The composition of the perfume is undoubtedly complex and the blend of a high quality design.
The perfume is one that once you are wearing it you notice it quite a lot and this makes me feel very special. It is a long lasting perfume too so no need to keep reapplying. I do feel a bit more classy when wearing this perfume and I tend to use it when I have official things to do rather than just when I'm relaxing or playing! I feel like the perfume makes a clear statement about who I am, my tastes and abilities.
I am taken aback that I like the perfume so much as I really thought this was one ladies much older than me who might have first discovered the perfume after it was just launched. However, I feel this perfume has stood the test of time and is just as pleasant to wear now as it was back in the 80's! I would recommend it to any woman looking for something very elegant or something that makes you feel affluent and self-assured.
